Buffaloed by AFN

If you’re a Buffalo Bills’ fan, you have my sympathy. And not just because of the team’s lack of success in the post-Marv Levy era.

Nope, where you earn my condolences is for the cavalier way AFN television has treated the Bills’ first two games this year.

Last Monday morning, Central European Time, AFN-Sports chose to stick with the U.S. Open men’s final to the bitter end instead of cutting to the scheduled Bills-at-New England game as soon as possible. Thus, we sat through the interminable presentation-of-trophy speeches instead of getting to the football game — which featured the return of Tom Brady to the Patriots and Terrell Owens’ debut with the Bills — right after Juan Martin Del Potro rose from the court and shook Roger Federer’s hand. The U.S. Open ended at that point, not several commercial breaks later.

But AFN’s not content to end Bills’ fans’ torments there. This week, they’re scheduled to join the Tampa Bay-at-Buffalo game an hour or so late to allow AFN-Xtra time to show the end of the Sprint Cup race in New Hampshire. Granted, NASCAR fans should get a chance to see their heroes, particularly at this crucial juncture of the season, but given the type of weather common in late September in New England, Bills’ and Bucs’ fans will be lucky to see any of this game at all. All-but-certain rain delays in the car race should keep us there, and not in Buffalo.

What do you think?

Is a joined-in-progress game better than nothing at all, or should AFN pick another team’s game to step on this week?
