Make your pitch for slow pitch

Summer began Monday, and summer means softball in U.S. Forces Europe sports.

Actually, however, it doesn't. Summer in Europe means "slow-pitch," an outgrowth of
summer picnics that has replaced the skill and elegance of softball on the
sports calendar.

Slow-pitch is not softball.

Many years ago, I had the privilege of covering the last fast-pitch European
softball championships and was rewarded with tightly pitched and tightly played
games of skill, which usually ended with 2-1 and 1-0 scores. Hits were hard to
come by, and defensive excellence was the norm. Strategy and intelligent play
usually made the difference.

Last summer, I covered the USFE "slow-pitch" championships and the difference could
not have been more stark. Outs, not hits, were hard to come by. Pitchers,
instead of breaking curveballs off under the hands of batters in the dignified
way of their fast-pitch predecessors, were reduced to retreating as far as
possible after letting the ball go, so as to lessen their chances of being
decapitated by line shots off the metal bats of pumped-up batters.

Strategy essentially became a case of when to use one of the allotted home runs. And so
numerous were the home runs and the foul balls that cleared the field's 30-foot
fences it took a footlocker-sized box of balls to get through the title game.

In short, the games were nothing less than a live-action video game.

Is that what military athletes want?

High school girls play fast-pitch, why not grown-up soldiers, sailors, airmen and
Marines?

If you're a slow-pitch player, let us know why your game's better.

I need convincing.

Slow Pitch

I wanted to jump in about fast-pitch versus slow-pitch.

Slow pitch can be a community social event. Almost anyone can play. Becoming a slow pitch pitcher does not require years of training. Fast pitch is often a non-scoring event. We like to score!!!

You can play slow-pitch until you are 80....

Fast pitch, at the high school level, really boils down to having a great pitcher and catcher. Often, the other players could make a sandwich and break out some chips. Slow pitch involves many more people because batters make more contact with the ball.

My two cents!

All-Armed Forces softball

Rusty:

Spot on re: why fastpitch is a more exciting, closer to real baseball game than fastpitch.

Military softball generally revolves around slowpitch because of the All-Armed Forces sports program's commitment to the Amateur Softball Association and ASA's national Class A championships each year.

We last saw a Pacificwide fastpitch tournament in 1990 at Osan Air Base, South Korea.

Interest died out here simply because of lack of pitching and slowpitch is easier to hit.

Comments moved.

Gentlemen, I have moved these comments from a previous post, due to the fact that comments on this post were disabled. Sorry for the confusion

Fast pitch vs. Slow pitch

I can see a case for both--slow pitch is great for unit bonding and getting to know others in the community in a fun, active setting. No (real)issues for men only, co-ed, etc.

On the other hand, I can definitely appreciate the need for a more physically challenging, hyper competitive sports arena for baseball/softball players and think that fast-pitch should be the way to go for those who live on Red Bull, Monster, etc.

Slow pitch v. fast pitch

A beer or two before the game is fine. NOT WITH FAST PITCH THOUGH. I'll take my slow pitch game anyday. And it's not all about scoring. Ask anyone who was in Korea during the late 80's. "EUSA - EUSA - EUSA - HEY". I believe we had six no-hitter's and one Perfect Game one of those years.
