Beyond European culture- other events
Posted April 22nd, 2008 by Karen BradburySo, you’ve explored the museums and architecture of Europe’s greatest capital cities. You’ve seen the Alps, the Mediterranean and the North Sea. You’ve gone hyper local and sampled the wares at your town’s wine fest, braved the rides at your local fun fair, and you know the bike trails in your town like the back of your hand. In short, you’ve done Europe.
Now that you’ve gotten that out of the way, why not find the time to celebrate some other cultures of the world? If that appeals, Europe throws on a slew of events that can help you on your way.
May 9-11 -- Copenhagen Carnival, Although there are issues in its organization, and this year’s event may not be as large as it has been in previous years, the event’s Web site assures us that the carnival, which has Brazilian roots, will take place and include a parade along the city’s main walking street and festival tents in one of the city’s parks, Faelledparken.
May 9-12 -- Carnival of Cultures, Berlin’s four-day festival will give an anticipated 1 million-plus visitors a taste of Germany’s diverse and colorful capital. May 11, Whitsunday, is parade day. Most of the participants, who hail from some 80 nations, are current inhabitants of Berlin.
May 22-25 -- Africa Festival, International Afro Roots. Würzburg, Germany, annually hosts what it terms Europe’s biggest festival for African music and culture. If you hold a ticket to one of the evening’s big-name concerts, entrance to the festival grounds is free on that day. Otherwise, an adult admission is 5 euros, a family ticket is 15 euros and admission is free for children younger than 12. Anticipate live music and DJs, a children’s program, an African bazaar, a handicraft market, movies and a food tent.
June 14-15 -- Alles Tanz! Munich’s international festival of dance and music is just one of many activities commemorating Munich’s 850th birthday and encompasses the theme of building bridges between cultures.
June 14-21 -- Amsterdam Roots Festival, The theme for 2008 is “World in Europe,” and some 60 concerts will be held at a variety of venues. One of the festival’s most popular traditions is the free, open-air festival at the Oosterpark, which will feature musicians from Spain, France, South Africa and Portugal.
July 10-12 -- Sabor de Samba, This international festival in Offenburg, Germany, offers about 18 bands and dance groups. Musical styles include everything from reggae to funk to soul to samba.
July 25-26 -- Summercarnival, in Rotterdam, Netherlands. This Caribbean carnival claims similarity to Rio’s famous festival, and visitors from all over Europe come to dance to Latin music, admire the costumes, and watch the floats pass by in a street parade. A highlight promises to be the Battle of the Drums on July 26.
Aug. 5-7 -- World Music Festival, Mostar, Bosnia-Herzegovina. On the program you’ll find days filled with cultural and educational events and evenings of world music. Bosnia-Herzegoniva’s traditions will also be showcased. The organizers hope in this way to reintegrate Mostar and the country into the world cultural map, as well as to spread tolerance throughout the region.
Aug. 21-23 -- Rio on the Rhine, Arnhem, Netherlands. This is another Caribbean-flavored fest promising parades, parties and music.
Aug. 24-25 -- Notting Hill Carnival, This huge festival in London has been taking place for more than 40 years and celebrates the Caribbean spirit with costumes, calypso and steel band music.
