Europe Traveler

Stripes travel enthusiast Karen Bradbury shares ideas for great getaways and ways to save dollars for our Europe-based readers.

Meet your blogger

Hi. My name is Karen, and I am a traveloholic. Give me a long weekend, and I can’t resist hitting the road to somewhere. Sometimes I don’t know where I’m headed until I am there.

A castle that sits above Vianden, Luxembourg.Sometimes I go to the train station, look at the departures board, and choose a destination on the spot. To feed my travel-lust, I have based myself in Europe since 1990. Moscow, Copenhagen, Rome and now the Frankfurt area have all been called home in the past decade. Traveling with one or two people is probably what I like most -- but lacking a travel buddy is no deterrent. My husband is a great travel partner, but his erratic work schedule means I often have weekends on my own. We don’t have kids, but we like a lot of things that would appeal to them -- festivals, amusement parks and castles are all good in our book. I feel package deals should never be overlooked -- sometimes they offer itineraries you could never piece together for twice the price.

The view from the top of the 528-foot tall Ulm Münster in Ulm, Germany. If I’m on my own, savings is the name of the game. But if I’m traveling with my husband or a friend who rarely gets to Europe, I’m not averse to splashing out. I’m open to all options. So I’m asking you to join me in launching our travel blog! The goal is for all of us to share our wealth of expertise, and to provide encouragement to one another to get out and go.

While the focus will be travel in Europe, occasionally our virtual travels might take us farther afield. After all, there’s a big wide world out there waiting. Or rather, not waiting. So much is happening, with or without us. Why not be part of it all?

Visitors are dwarfed by a large statue in front of the Völkerschlachtdenkmal in Leipzig, Germany.I’d like to suggest that visitors to this site take the time to share a little bit about themselves and their travel style. Please find below some questions to get you started -- but feel free to embellish or skip over any of them at will. Providing us with your travel profile will help us know who’s with us and what your interests are, so we can tailor the site accordingly.

How often do you travel as a form of recreation? What motivates you to choose a certain destination? Do you prefer to travel in a large group, with a good friend, as a couple, or by yourself? Do you usually have kids in tow? Do you like to stick to a tight budget, or do you prefer to splurge? Do you look for package deals with the arrangements made for you, or do you like piecing together your own itinerary? Where’s your next trip?

Neat and cheap getaways

Our access to these opportunities increased immeasurably when we recently discoverd Ryan Air - with their sometimes really cheap flights. Flexibility is the key but locations are numerous.

This is my first blog entry.

Getting around

Our traveling habits have changed through the years, from camping and hostels, to traveling with kids in B&Bs, to fly-and-hotel deals. But we are always interested in finding new places around Europe. I think we'll stick to traveling by car for most of our travels, because that gives us more flexibility, but if you have any rail or air options, we're glad to hear about them. What are your experiences outside of Central Europe? What are some good places to check out?

Looking for travel partner

Hi there! My name is Christine and I live just outside of Ramstein, Germany. Just like Karen, I'm married, no kids and love to travel. We've lived in the area for about two years now and I love it! I travel as much as possible and have been all over Europe (Western, Central and Eastern). I research my own travels via the tourism center of the city I'll be visiting, as well as: www.tripadvisor.com, www.virtualtourist.com, www.secretplaces.com, and www.venere.com

My husband works ALOT, leaving me home alone, so I'm always looking for someone to travel with during the week or weekends....be it an individual or group....I prefer to have a companion rather than travel solo. If anyone is looking for a travel buddy, please let me know! I'm pretty easy going and up for most anything (except clubbing....at 38, I'm more into a nice dinner and wine). Flying, driving, train....makes no difference to me.

I created a webpage to log our travels and keep friends/family abreast of what we are doing. If you are interested in checking it out and have any questions regarding a location, I'd be happy to help. www.thebradleys.atomicshops.com.

Thanks kindly - Christine

Hi, Karen!

I am sure you are doing a fine job in the travel department, but wish you were back as letters editor. It seems the "new" letters editor, not a fan of mine in the past, won't even acknowledge much less print my letters now. Rattle her cage sometime at lunch. People need to be heard, not just the favs of some of the editors. I'll be in touch, especially if you can get a Super Bowl ducat.
