Quirky Columbus Day weekend ideas

Stuck for ideas on one-day outings to enhance this upcoming long weekend? Here are a few last-minute ideas I came up with, but what’s on your to-do list? If you know of something fun, please let others know by leaving a comment! Thank you.

Germany

Lucky ducks should head for the Ninth Annual Tubinger Entenrennen, or Duck Race, taking place in Tübingen at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6. You can cast a rubber duck into the Neckar River and see if it beats out its fellow quackers to the finish line. Duck rental is available until 1 p.m. on the day, and proceeds from the race go to benefit charities. For a description of the event in English, visit whatsonwhen.com.

Well upstream from Tübingen but also along the Neckar, you could head toward the Odenwald and Hirschhorn’s Pumpkin and Chestnut week, featuring culinary delights made of these perennial treats of autumn. This event runs through Sunday, Oct. 7.

If you still haven’t had your fill of wine and festivals, Weinheim’s Wine Mile could make for a nice diversion on Saturday, Oct. 6. In the same neighborhood, the Bergsträßer Winzerfest Lützelsachsen runs through Sunday, Oct. 7. Neustadt is also hosting a number of wine-related events on these dates; check out the town’s weekend tips.

Belgium

If you’re in the Brussels area, you could always check out the scarecrows that will be gracing the Grand Place this Saturday, Oct. 6. Prizes will be awarded in various categories, from most original to most creative -- even a “most poetic” title will be awarded, whatever that means. See http://www.epouvantails.be/index.php, or for a good description in English, once again see whatsonwhen.

England

Although a bit far afield for most, the Nottingham Goose Fair boasts more than 500 attractions and is running through Saturday, Oct. 6. The event even has its very own signature dish -- mushy peas with mint sauce, mmm.

Enjoy Columbus Day weekend!
