No week off in fantasy

As you try to piece together your fantasy lineup this week, remember: You are not alone. The injuries to running backs and quarterbacks combined with the Week 6 bye that has six teams sitting out (Six teams with a top rusher, no less) is leaving everyone grasping for help.

Last week and the week before were bad enough with four teams off. Scores in my Yahoo league were way down both weeks, which is to be expected during bye weeks, but injuries have compounded the problem. You know the bye weeks in advance and can draft depth accordingly. You can’t account for injuries, at least not this many.

And now, the first of two weeks with six teams off is going to test your ability to field a team of players that will actually see the field on Sunday. (Another six-team bye comes along in two weeks, though the fantasy stable on those teams isn’t quite as deep as this week.)

Here’s some of my favorites that can help teams when, with scores low and even marginal players’ points are at a premium, every little bit will help.

I’ll quickly list some players who should need little or no explanation other than they are getting and will continue to get regular work:

  • Correll Buckhalter (Eagles);
  • Leon Washington (Jets);
  • Earnest Graham (Bucs);
  • Ron Dayne (Texans);
  • Jerious Norwood (Falcons);
  • DeAngelo Williams (Panthers) ;
  • Kenny Watson (Bengals – Rudi Johnson is still slowed by balky hamstring).

Musa Smith (Ravens) – he has been getting 6-8 carries and passes (touches) each week and has scored a TD, something starter Willis McGahee has not done. Smith will get that and possibly more this week against what has been a bad Rams team. I can envision a lopsided game in which Smith carries 10-12 times on top of McGahee’s 25 carries.

Travis Minor (Rams) – He’s not second on my list, but it’s the same game. He had eight touches last week and was targeted on five passes. If the Rams are behind and having trouble running, he might see more action, which means more chances, more yards and more points.

Vernand Morency (Packers) – DeShawn Wynn shouldn’t need to be listed here since he’s not much of a surprise, but Morency might be. He carried or caught the ball 16 times last week (two more than Wynn) for 91 yards.

Michael Turner (Chargers) – He’s always on the radar as Tomlinson’s backup, but only rarely does he do enough to justify being in a fanasty lineup. San Diego has owned the Raiders recently, and if they get ahead again, Tomlinson will rest and Turner will produce.

Adrian Peterson (Bears) –The other Peterson has averaged six touches a game and is more a part of the passing game than Cedric Benson. That might be the key this week as Chicago goes up against Minnesota solid run defense, allowing Peterson to gain more than the 44 yards he had last week.

I’m a Redskins fans, but I’m not buying Mike Sellers as a fantasy stud despite his two TDs last week. I’d put him in the category of “better-than-nothing” along with Greg Jones (Jaguars), Zach Crockett (Bucs, his having played for Gruden before gives him a chance to see the field) and Jesse Chatman (Dolphins, who has disappeared while Ronnie Brown has exploded).

Hope that helps. What do you think?
