GI Bill Mailbag

Reporter Leo Shane answers readers’ questions about new veterans education benefits being considered by Congress.

What about flight schools and trade schools?

What about flight schools and aviation degree programs like Embry Riddle or UVSC'S Global aviation degree program? How does that work?

-- Jeromey

Flight schools, trade schools, technical schools – the majority of these will remain under the old GI Bill provisions. But they will see a 20 percent bump in reimbursement rates starting this fall, just like students in college will.

The new benefits also include $2,000 for licensing or certification tests, for troops looking at those training options.

the stipeden

if i attend a tech school or trade school that is a 60 week course will i be entitled to the house allowance stipend?

RE: Trade school stipend

That's going to depend on how the VA classifies your school. In most cases, unless it puts the school in the same category as four-year universities, you probably won't be eligible.

But I can't say for sure right now, so keep asking about it when you contact the VA.

what does it cover for short schools such as a commercial diving

how does the reimbursement work for the short schools. i was looking at the commercial diving academy in Jacksonville and its about 20k total but it is only about 4 months long. how much will it cover and how much will it reimburse and over what period. im having a hard time finding information on the current gi bill concerning trade schools.

RE: driving school

I'd assume that would fall under the same category as the trade schools, meaning that you'll receive the old GI bill benefits that folks will see this fall.

But the VA has the final say on all of these -- you're going to have to give them a call to see specifics about the Jacksonville school. It may be that your school doesn't fall under the policy, and you're only eligible for that $2,000 testing fee.
