GI Bill Mailbag

Reporter Leo Shane answers readers’ questions about new veterans education benefits being considered by Congress.

What forms do I need to file?

I am getting out of the Navy in the next six months. I plan to go to college once I get out. If I decide to wait to start college until August of 2009, what will I have to do to use the new G.I Bill? Is there anything special that you have to do or any new forms you have to fill out to be eligible for it?

For now the VA isn’t announcing any new enrollment procedures or paperwork for the expanded GI bill benefits this fall or the “Chapter 33” benefits next year. Eventually, they’ll likely have new proof-of-service requirements and other such paperwork, but for now nothing has changed.

The same goes for transferring benefits to family members; Until the Pentagon decides how the program will be administered and whether it will be tied to re-enlistment requirements, there’s no paperwork or enrollment requirements.

Keep an eye on the VA’s education benefits site for more information. They’ve just added an e-mail update feature that hopefully will keep everyone in the loop on changes.
