Fearless Football Forecast, Week 6

Ornauer didn't do so hot last week, a pedestrian 3-3, leaving him at 22-7 so far this season with six weeks to go. Should have expected a four-time defending Guam champion to remind us why they're a four-time defending champion. Robert D. Edgren topping Nile C. Kinnick on the road, something of an upset.

On to Week 6:

Friday
Japan

People to watch, end of September

Random thoughts from the last two weeks of competition:

-- What a breakthrough for Robert D. Edgren football. Not just coming back from a 14-0 hole to beat Nile C. Kinnick, but to do it on the road -- coach Chris Waite's first away victory in his two seasons as coach. That Class A football championship on Nov. 3 is going to be a goodie.

Reverse: DODDS-Europe adjusts football mercy rule

DODDS-Europe made some tweaks Wednesday to the mercy rule that governs how high school football games are played and reported to the press.

The key plank where Stripes is concerned: No more are coaches bound to report victory/defeat margins of 39 points when a game turns into a blowout.

"We want the actual scores to be reported to the public," DODDS-Europe's deputy director Linda Curtis told Stripes.

Prior to Wednesday, if a game ended in a 76-0 verdict or otherwise, the coaches were required to report it as 39-0. As a result, Stripes in Europe last weekend declined to report scores of all DODDS-Europe athletic contests due to concerns over accuracy.

Fearless Football Forecast, Week 5

Always a first time for everything -- a perfect 6-0 week, first of the season, leaving ORNY at 19-4, 82.6 percent on the campaign.

Here we go with Week 5 prognostication:

Friday
Japan
Yokota vs. Zama American at Atsugi Naval Air Facility, 7 p.m. -- It's been five years since Yokota's faced a Zama team that's won two or more consecutive games. The Trojans are back; the Panthers have won 43 straight in the regular season, and are still the champs until somebody knocks them off ... Yokota 16, Zama American 13.

Zama, Taegu: Officially on the football map

Now, there can be no mistaking it. Zama American's and Taegu American's football programs are officially on the competitive map after years of wandering in the wilderness.

Welcome to the land of contention! Great to have you!

A tip of the cap to Ken Johnson, the senior who proved equally versed in scoring on defense (73-yard third-quarter fumble return) and offense (20-yard fourth-quarter TD run) in the Trojans' 18-8 win Friday at American School In Japan. And new coach Steven Merrell's Wing-T offense also showcased Josh Johnson, whose 16-yard second-quarter reverse gave Zama a 6-2 lead it would not relinquish.

Rule 39-0*: Sign of respect or misrepresentation?

Coaches, players, administrators, whole football communities in Europe and the Pacific are debating the merits of an extension of DODDS-Europe's "courtesy rule" passed for this season that mandates coaches report victory margins of no more than 39 points to Stars and Stripes in Europe.

In 1989, National Federation of State High School Associations adopted what's called the "mercy rule." Teams leading by 40 points or more must remove key players from the field and the game clock becomes a running clock.

I'll call DODDS-Europe's extension to that Rule 39-0*.

Fearless Football Forecast, Week 4

Another 5-1 week, left ORNY at 13-4 thus far this season. Apologies for the delay; here with go with the Week 4 forecast, which should feature a number of teams beating their opponents for the first time in a long time:

Friday

Japan
Zama American at American School In Japan, 7 p.m.-Not since Weeks 9 and 10 of the 2004 season have the Trojans won back-to-back games. That changes during the second-ever night game at Mustang Valley ... Zama American 17, American School In Japan 10.

South Korea

People to watch at mid-September

Who in the world is Kennedy Allen and where in the world did she come from?

Just a sophomore, Allen has zoomed her way straight to the head of the class, the front of the line, two-time defending Far East Tennis Tournament champion Seoul American's No. 1 girls singles seed.

I don't think anybody needs any more proof than what occured on Friday at Camp Walker and Saturday at Daejeon, where Allen dispatched Taegu American's top singles seed Vanessa Fernandez-Torres and Taejon Christian International's Christina Cho without dropping a single game.

This one bears considerable watching.

Fearless Football Forecast, Week 3

That Guam High stubbed its toe against one of the top teams in the Independent Interscholastic Athletic Association of Guam may have been expected. But not the fireworks of one Kinnick junior tailback Tyree Hunt, who singlehandedly torched Zama American and left me with a 4-2 mark last week. That's 8-3 on the season, 72.7 percent.

Here we go with Week 3:

Friday
Japan
Nile C. Kinnick at Yokota, 7 p.m. -- Can Hunt be just as prolific against the eight-time Japan Football League and Kanto Plain Association of Secondary Schools champion Panthers? Sure makes for an interesting showdown, Hunt vs. Yokota's Anthony McNeill, Tony Presnell, DeEric Harvin and Co. ... Yokota 18, Nile C. Kinnick 14.

Hunt for Red Devil of a running back

That wasn't like anybody had seen since ... oh, about 10 days earlier at Misawa Air Base, where Robert D. Edgren senior Zach Latimore ran roughshod over Nile C. Kinnick to the tune of 305 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns in the Eagles' 20-7 victory.

Tyree Hunt must be a quick and excellent student of Latimore's ability. After rushing for only a pedestrian 97 yards on 12 carries in that game, Hunt set off some Monday night fireworks at Camp Zama.

Try 229 yards and five touchdowns on 10 attempts.

In one half.

Kinnick rallies from 13-0 halftime deficit to roar back and win 36-20. Game, set, match.
