Taegu finds its offense; Guam High still seeking theirs; Zama closes on high note

Taegu American's Friday night 36-0 shellacking of Osan American in effect put Robert D. Edgren on notice: The Warriors do have an offense.

Try 384 yards' worth, on the ground alone. Angel Hickman 205 of them, Antonio Harris 123 of them, with two touchdowns each. Trey Griffin and Brandon Harris each contributed a rushing touchdown.

That compares favourably with Edgren's multiple-skills position package. Andrew Blankenship and Josh McDonald are more straight-ahead runners than anything, but you talk about a sweet complement for the ever-shifty, ever-dangerous Jacque Moton and "that guy," Zach Latimore.

But lest we forget, Taegu has allowed just nine points in its last four games.

Fearless Football Forecast, Week 9

There's a kind of hush over the Pacific gridirons, as some teams prepare for the playoffs, and others look ahead to better things next season  Ornauer went a perfect 7-0 for the week, making him 41-8 for the season.

Here's a look at Week 9:

Friday
Japan
American School In Japan at Yokota, 7 p.m. -- Host Panthers' last tuneup for their visit to Guam High and the Class AA semifinals. Paper trail says Yokota should run its Pacific-record regular-season winning streak to 48 games, but winless Mustangs could be dangerous if only because they have nothing to lose by ending it. ... Yokota 26, American School In Japan 12.

Class AA football playoffs breakdown

To paraphrase the old Toyota commercial motto: You asked for it; you got it! :)

Class A championship
Robert D. Edgren at Taegu American, Kelly Field, Camp Walker, South Korea, 2 p.m. Nov. 3 -- Host Warriors' sturdy defense led by Dan Garcia (28 points allowed thus far) and its two-pronged offensive threat (Antonio Harris, Angel Hickman) against a dynamic Eagles offense revolving around dangerous senior backs Zach Latimore and Jacque Moton and workmanlike fullbacks Andrew Blankenship and Josh McDonald. The home team has won the first two meetings in this series. This should be as close as the first one, when Osan American edged Edgren 16-14. ... Robert D. Edgren 17, Taegu American 15.

Class AA semifinals

Fearless Football Forecast, Week 8

Only one berth left to be decided in the Far East playoffs that start Nov. 3. A 6-1 week left Ornauer at 34-8, 81 percent for the season. The lone blotch on the ledger -- Kadena's 45-0 shutout of Kubasaki in Game 1 of the Okinawa Activities Council's best-of-three series. A Kadena victory Friday would seal that last outstanding playoff bid.

Here we go with Week 8:

Friday
Okinawa
Kubasaki vs. Kadena at McDonald Stadium, Risner Fitness & Sports Complex, Kadena Air Base, 7 p.m. -- Unless the visiting Dragons can somehow get their injured skills-positions people healthy and the chemistry right, Ernest Carr, Roosevelt Payne and the host Panthers should enjoy a very happy homecoming ... Kadena 22, Kubasaki 8.

People to watch, mid-October

Random thoughts as we continue headlong toward Far East tournaments and playoffs early next month:

-- So we thought Kadena's football team was a bit short on skills-positions players? Don't tell that to Ernest Carr, he of the 194 yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries in the Panthers' 45-0 blanking at Kubasaki in Game 1 of the best-of-three Okinawa Activities Council football series. Kadena sure got the jump on gaining host rights to the Far East Class AA semifinal on Nov. 3. Carr could very easily have 'em forgetting all about the skills-positions exodus (Manny Duran, Jeff Morton, Sean Shattuck) that was supposed to hold back Kadena this season.

Fearless Football Forecast, Week 7

Into the home stretch, and with playoff spots up for grabs, things begin to get very intense this week.

Ornauer rebounded nicely with his second 6-0 ledger of the season, putting him at 28-7 thus far, an even 80 percent.

Here we go with Week 7:

Friday
Japan
Yokota at Nile C. Kinnick, 7 p.m.--Panthers, 6-0 with that 45-game regular-season winning streak under their belts, seal a trip to the Class AA semifinal Nov. 3 at Guam High without worry about tiebreakers, and gain a season sweep of the Red Devils ... Yokota 22, Nile C. Kinnick 14.

Kubasaki-Yokota; what it really means

What may have gone unnoticed Saturday at Bonk Field was the game experience that each team had going into the historic first regular-season meeting of Okinawa at Japan.

Yokota played its eighth game of the season, including two preseason contests with Japanese schools. Though the Panthers' run defense may need a bit of Brasso, Yokota's game experience very much showed in its offensive execution. Let's say 321 rushing yards on 52 carries, more than 6 yards a try, and six touchdowns is not peanuts.

'No-Hate Zone' reminder; keep it on topic

Campers:

A handful of comments re: Kubasaki-Yokota got a tad too personal, so they were removed.

Just a friendly reminder: Please, keep the comments to the discussion topic and avoid the trash talking.

We all have our druthers with regard to our teams, definitely a lot of pride and poise as we stand with them.

But let's remember what we're here for.

You've entered THE "No-Hate Zone." Let's keep it that way, eh? :)
