Falcons senior forward Taylor earns full ride at Newberry College in S.C.

Speaking of ways it can be done, Devanee' Taylor struck big paydirt by thinking small.

Small, that is, in terms of college size. The Seoul American senior forward in 2009-10 will don the scarlet and grey of Newberry College, a private Lutheran school playing in the NCAA Division II South Atlantic Conference.

She could have tried to walk on at Connecticut, Duke, Stanford or Tennessee, where in all likelihood she would have been shown the end of the bench, if she made the team at all.

At a Division II school of less than 1,000, she not only gets playing time, she gets her education paid for ($30,000 per year in financial grants-in-aid), and will be taught by professors instead of graduate assistants. Best of all worlds. Fly, Falcons, Fly!

Small Schools - Big Opportunities

Kudos to her for taking the plunge into the next level. We so often view Division I as the end all, be all of college athletics but we often forget the primary reason why student-athletes are there in the first place. She will indeed do well.

Dave,

I was poking around the Univ. of Dubuque site and it should probably be renamed DoDDS-U I found no fewer than four DoDDS kids on their roster:

Keily Sasano - FR - Setter from Zama
Tiffany Hight - FR - MB from Aviano
Aja Brown - JR - S/Opp. from Alconbury
Kimberly Wright - FR - Middle Blocker from Yokota

I will be at the DoDDS-Europe Volleyball Camp @ Aviano this year and the Univ. of Dubuque coach will be running it...hmm, could be some opportunities for many out there.

Re: Small schools -- big opportunities

USA_vball_coach, I met up with Bob twice in the last month. He went over the whole package of DODDS athletes who've made their way to Dubuque, and also the new athletics complex that recently opened there. What a great way to go! Small school, being taught by professors, plenty of playing time AND have that built-in comfort zone of going to the same school with DODDS athletes. What notes they can compare. And believe me, it's just the beginning.

Check out the Football Roster

Quite a few DoDDS kids as well on the football roster...notably Antonio Harris and Angel Hickman of Daegu fame...they will undoubtedly light it up as they progress (and earn their degrees)...great place for these kids.

Quite a few from Kadena as well...I'm detecting a real pattern here...

I'M SO PROUD!!!!!!!!!

IM SO PROUD!

Being a former teammate, I have to say that Dev deserves this! She has worked so hard for this moment, and I know that she will shine. Keep your head up Dev and just know that this is just the beginning. It only gets harder. Play with the intensity of a first game, the mind set of a championship game, and the heart of a true player.

love you always...
congratulations!

congrats

first off, i want to say CONGRATULATIONS to devanee'! It's awesome to hear that people from DODDS Pacific schools get recogized all the way over there. Sounds like we had something good going over there, first with Avi walking on to her school's volleyball team, and now Dev. I'm at Florida, and Avi's v-ball tournament is going to be held here, so I will definitely be going to those! and hopefully Dev will have some games down around here. I wonder who is next. I'm waiting for 2011, when Liz Gleaves graduates. Wonder what sport she'll play and where.
G'luck with your last season of high schoo basketball!

The Falcons Strategy

The Falcons have to figure out ways to execute better against loaded eight- and nine-man defensive fronts.

Every team the Falcons face knows they are going to run the ball. Carolina, Denver, Philadelphia and Chicago have been able to shut down the run with loaded defensive fronts.

BTW, saw some cool widgets at statbeast.com. Take a look!

This is Avianca Manning, and

This is Avianca Manning, and as a former teammate, and low post player with "Dev", I have to say it's such relief to see someone so sweet retrieve such a good offer so quickly. Shes like my little sister (despite the fact that shes taller than me.) :o)

I'm proud of her, and I know her talent will carry her a long way.

Oh, and DEV IF YOUR'E READING THIS I WANT HALF THE PROFIT IN THE LONG RUN :) 15%

Love you dearly and again, Congrats!
