Far East High School Basketball Tournaments 5.0: What we learned Friday

Musings and mutterings as the Class A tournaments go in the history book and the Class AA championship games beckon:

-- Not surprising: Every time -- four times, to be exact -- that Osan American's girls have placed third in the Korean-American Interscholastic Activities Conference tournament, they've won the Far East Class A Tournament. The latest happened Friday, when Jasmine Pressley and the COUGARS edged Robert D. Edgren 41-37.

-- Surprising: Edgren's rise to the Class A championship game after going 3-18 last season.

-- Not surprising: Edgren's opponents throwing everything and the kitchen sink at Eagles guard Ashley Hawkins defensively.

-- Not surprising: That Hawkins was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. By strict definition, player most valuable to her team.

-- Surprising: Osan American's girls winning Class A titles in volleyball and basketball, and not securing at least one MVP award in the process.

-- Surprising: This was the first all-DODDS-Pacific Girls Class A Tournament final since the Osan-Matthew C. Perry "dance" championship game in 2002.

-- Surprising: Lack of a shot clock has barely been in the conversation this week.

-- Not surprising: Stephen Hovater and Morrison Christian Academy capturing their third Boys Class A Tournament title.

-- Surprising: Dethroned champion Yongsan International-Seoul reaching the Boys Class A championship and forcing a second "if necessary" title game with Morrison after going 0-4 in pool play.

-- Somewhat surprising, except to them: Daegu American rising to third place in the Boys Class A Tournament. They'd been pedestrian throughout the regular season and in pool play this week, but the Warriors really broke out in the playoffs, only running out of gas in the third-place knockout game.

-- Not surprising: Double-elimination playoffs can make any team's legs feel like rubber.

-- Not surprising: Faith Academy and Seoul American reaching the Girls Class AA title game.

-- Surprising: Faith being held to a tournament-low 44 points and Seoul having to come from six points down and not taking the lead until 6:14 remained in the contest.

-- Not surprising: Liz Gleaves making all the difference for Seoul as the Falcons dethroned two-time champion Kadena 54-51.

-- Not surprising: Yokota becoming the 20th host school since 1982 to reach Center Court in the Boys Class AA Tournament.

-- Surprising: DeEric Harvin's wheeling, spinning half-court three-point goal at the buzzer to end the third quarter.

-- Not surprising: Yokota having to come back from a second-period deficit. "That's what we do. We fight back," guard Tajh Kirby said.

-- Not surprising: St. Mary's International dethroning Seoul American in Friday's other semifinal, Yes, you read right. We've seen this before out of St. Mary's. In the 2001 Class AA tournament on Guam, St. Mary's got blown out by Kadena in pool play; in fact, went 0-3 in pool play and had to win a play-in game just to make the 16-team tournament field. Then, the Titan steamrolled the field into the final, where they met -- yes -- Kadena. And won 53-50. Give coach Fred Sava a second, third or fourth chance against anybody, and eventually, he'll get ya.

-- Very surprising: St. Mary's margin of victory over Seoul American. Somewhat ironic, that Seoul routed St. Mary's 62-35 in pool play on Tuesday, and had beaten the Titans by double-digit margins in two other contests this season, only to watch the Titans beat the Falcons 62-36 on Friday.

-- Not surprising: Day 6 of the Class AA Tournaments, pitchers and catchers reported last week ... and Manny-child still doesn't have a job.

War spring sports tryouts. Two days.
