Musings and mutterings and the occasional bit of schmarts as Ornauer and the rest of the Pacific heads into the spring break home stretch:
-- Not just one, but TWO no-hitters tossed last weekend. Are you kidding me? Senior Eddy Davis of Nile C. Kinnick tossed a five-inning gem in an 18-1 rout at Yokota; Seoul American senior Jina Kim accorded Osan American the same treatment in an 8-0 triumph. Davis struck out nine batters; Kim fanned 10. Both victories on the road.
-- Enough was enough, coach Sarah Richardson and the Robert D. Edgren girls softball team decided. No more taking a backseat to Kinnick, and the Eagles' 15-3 triumph over the Red Devils -- yep, on the road -- was quite emphatic. All good winning streaks must come to an end, as did the Red Devils' 19-game skein dating back to last season.
-- Still, no doubt that the conversion to fastpitch, done last year, certainly agrees with Kinnick. Pitchers Cheyenne Tullos and Callie Lamont and 11 players returning from the 2008 DODDS-Japan champion team certainly would enjoy doing it again.
-- They no longer run the mile and two-mile in the Kanto Plain, but if they still did, Zama American coach Mitch Moellendick estimates that senior All-American Andrew Quallio would have shattered the 25-year-old Kanto Plain Association of Secondary Schools two-mile standard. Quallio clocked the 3,000 in 8 minutes, 58.5 seconds; add an average conversion of 35 seconds for an extra 200 meters, and it comes out to 9:33.5. The "old" record? 9:38.9.
-- Congratulations to Guam High junior Emily Hoyle, freshman Alysa Durham and seniors Jackie MOrgan and Ashley Duenas for making the Independent Interscholastic Athletic Association of Guam's All-Island teams.
-- Tough times may lie ahead for Kadena's girls soccer team, missing four starters including strikers Kristie Karibian and Cassie McDonald and their combined 21 goals and eight assists; each was injured in the Panthers' 1-0 Okinawa Activities Council loss Friday at Kubasaki.
-- Speaking of one of the Pacific's hottest rivalries, naturally, the boys match would have to go to a shootout. That provision was added into the league's memo of understanding, perhaps fueled by the fact that Kadena's and Kubasaki's boys tied all five of their matches in 2007 ... and Kadena lost the Class AA final in a shootout against Christian Academy In Japan.
-- Among people tried at new positions over the weekend, Kubasaki's boys went with striker Rimar West at sweeper, with three of coach Chris Kelly's starters sidelined. And Kadena's girls pushed Britney Wise, who began the season at sweeper, back to forward, with fullback Shari Moss -- late of Yokota -- sliding into Wise's spot, at least until Karibian and McDonald return.
-- Repeat after me: Matthew C. Perry's girls soccer team is for real. So they tied Yokota 1-1 on Friday and lost 4-3 to Zama after leading 3-0 after 10 minutes. At 11-5-1, the Samurai hold their best record after 17 matches in school history.
-- Goal watch: Kadena's Stanley Schrock has matched Seoul Foreign's Andrew Park for the boys' regional lead with 11 goals. The field is pretty bunched up; Schrock's teammates Aaron Ahner and Patrick Reynolds have 10, as do Yongsan International-Seoul's Jonathan Park and David Kim and E.J. King's Jon-Jon Green, with Yokota's Tony Presnell, Edgren's Brandon Massie and Perry's Sean Barker next with nine. With Seoul Foreign on spring break, four players blew past Karen Lee's 19 goals; Perry's Karla Stroud and Zama's Aubrey Ashliman set the pace with 25 each, followed by Zama's Mallarie Ashliman (24) and Perry's Danielle Dobson (20).
Now, looking ahead to Week 5:
-- Weather forecast for Okinawa's Spring Fling baseball tournament and the Mike Petty Memorial Track and Field Meet: Good so far. Friday, partly cloudy, 20-percent chance of showers. Saturday, partly to mostly cloudy, 30-percent chance of showers.
-- Which records will fall at the Petty track meet? Ornauer says seven -- Quallio will demolish his own mile and two-mile marks (4:37.5 and 9:58.9), Mark Lieberg of Seoul Track Club will post unthinkable shot put and discus numbers; he holds the shot record at 14.79 meters. Kadena will shatter its own boys 400 relay mark, and Zion Christian Academy the girls 1,600 relay record. Quallio could also threaten the boys 800 standard. Total of seven to be broken, and three others remain in sight, including the boys high jump; Kadena's Lotty Smith has that one (1.96) in sight).
War Mike Petty. Four days.

strong Kinnick pitching
Just following the early part of the season it looks like Kinnick has some strong pitching.
So far i have noticed 2 or 3 names that have thrown for strong performances for at least 3 or 4 innings.

PACIFIC SPORTS ROCK THE CASBAH
Great articles this week (and not just because they featured Big Red Kinnick)!!!
I'm glad you chose Eddy Davis. He is a MONSTER out there and he's such a friendly and personable dude (at 6'5", he's just shy of Godzilla status). I also see that Seoul American has a MONSTER on their hands (monster=good:). WOW WOW and WOW, Jina Kim is the real deal!
The tournaments are slowly shaping up to be some incredible battles.
Is anyone else happy that we went with fast pitch softball? I AM! Slow-pitch isn't boring--not at all--but it just seems a teeny bit more exciting all around with the new addition. I saw the Kinnick/Edgren game last Friday and that was truly an epic battle. Both sides had great pitchers. I can't wait to see what happens when Jina Kim and Seoul knock on the door to say HELLO! WE'RE HERE TO PARTY, TOO!
Unca Dave, I'm still holding out hope that somehow, some way, someone decides to let DoDDS sports hop rides on all those military flights (you know, the ones that fly out daily from Yokota, Okinawa, Korea). I know, I know. I know it'll probably NEVER happen, but imagine if it did? THAT WOULD BE AMAZING!!!
Non-Far East Softball Tournament
Dave I just read your story about this years Japan District Girls Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament will include Kadena and Kubasaki. This is awesome and a great step forward. I know it isn't a real far east but this is cool!!! I wondering who is paying. I might have to come back to Japan just to see it.
Re: Non-Far East Softball Tournament
Funding is being done by the teams themselves. Last spring, it was decided to give each team at each school one day per season in which they could travel out of area for tournaments such as these.
Softball is borrowing a page from track and field, which saw the Far East tournament dollar cavalry wasn't coming and decided to take matters into its own hands; hence, the Mike Petty meet starting later today, and the Kanto Invitational next month at Oi Pier Ground in Tokyo.
