First blush at Pacific high school football Week 10.0

UPDATED AT 5:15 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31:

-- Daegu American 30, Osan American 28, OT: Antoine "Flash" Feagin three TD runs, three two-point runs, including the game-winners. Warriors coach Ken Walter called it the greatest game he's ever seen. Certainly the greatest game in DODEA Korea league's seven-season history.

-- Zama American 21, Nile C. Kinnick 14: Trojans' running game continues to struggle, but Mike Jorgenson's QB play, Ashton Norwood's takeaways enough to give Zama its first regular-season league title in school history.

-- American School In Japan 39, Yokota 6: The bad news for the rest of Japan is, QB Hayden Jardine ain't going anywhere. ASIJ captures first outright Kanto Plain title since 1983; Yokota's run of 10 straight Kanto and DODEA Japan titles ended at ASIJ's, Zama's hands.

-- George Washington 22, John F. Kennedy 6: Not as dominating as Santos & Santos usually are, only the second time Geckos have been scored on this season. Still, more than ready to challenge for the Bamboo Bowl title next Friday.

-- Father Duenas Memorial 20, Guam High 12: Panthers' bid for school-first Bamboo Bowl berth and Interscholastic Football League title comes to an end; DODEA Far East Class AA playoffs next.

Congratulations Zama Boys. Good Luck in Korea.

ASIJ

Domination from both the JV and Varsity this year. Good Job Boys.

Congrats goes to ASIJ and Zama

ASIJ: Congratulations, sure wish you were representing Japan at the AA Championships, you deserve too.

Zama: ICHI DAN !!! Way to go Trojans. You have come a long way in a short period of time. Stay focused and time to prepare for four more quarters of football.

osan vs daegu

sounds like a great game...

Good Luck Warriors

56-56: combined score of the last two games between the Cougars and Warriors.. doesn't get much better than that. Great job by both teams in making this a nail biting season, the way football should be.

Take it to Zama next week, and bring the title back to Korea..

ASIJ vs Yokota

I thought Yokota's defense came out really strong in the second half holding ASIJ to two straight 3 and outs...and then I went to the tape and counted the men on the field. 12...Not just for a play or two, but for the entirety of first two drives, Yokota had 12 players lined up on defense. There is no excuse for the refs or for the Yokota coaches. There is no way the Yokota coach could have missed that and its impossible for four refs to all be oblivious for so long. Its honestly a disgrace to the integrity of the game and the league.

Yokosuka Refs

The crew officiating the Kinnick-Zama game is the best crew we have seen all year. They let the boys play (no quick whistles) and they moved the game along without the long discussions about rule interpretations -- they knew the rules. Athletic Directors: give them a call for all games in the Kanto Plains next year.

Yokota game Back Judge should be canned!

Watch the tape.

How do you justify a Back Judge missing 12 players being on the field for 8 plays? This was the same Back Judge who had to have play stopped so that the Head Linesman could tell him where to stand for a field goal attempt.

You also have to question the defensive coordinator. Could he honestly say he didn't know he had 12 men on the field for 2 series? I guess if you know you're able to get away with it...

It was a great game and I'm glad the boys pulled it out. Too bad things like this have to happen.

Good luck in the play offs Zama.

Korea League

I would say last week watching both games between Daegu & Osan battle it out for the Korean title was the most exciting high school football games I've seen in a long time. Hard hitting, big plays & a lot of yelling/nailing biting from the fans. Looking at the scores from Japan they are usually blowouts. I remember a comment from someone early this season on your blog about the Korea League was weak. Well I can tell you that is absolutely 100% false. Yeah there is only 3 teams but there is a lot of talent here & hopefully next week Daegu shows it against Zama. Dave how about proposing an "All-Star" game between the best players from Korea & Japan? I know for a fact Korea has some talented players here besides some big boys. Also maybe next year you can come see some football in Korea instead of staying in Japan for the entire season.

12 men

When was the 12th player removed from the game? As soon as it was noticed by the Yokota coaches. If anyone had noticed it beforehand from ASIJ they would have been screaming their heads off. If you only noticed it on a film, that shows it wasn't as easy to catch as you make it out to be.
What would be the point of intentionally putting a 12th man on the field? It wasn't a close game...think about it.

Think about it?

Of course it's an 'easy catch'. You start at 1 and count to 11. If you hit 12, there's something wrong. The first responsibility of the Back Judge on every play is to count the number of players the defensive team. Every time; every play.

Since the same thing happened for 8 straight plays where the Yokota defence was on the field, there was obviously a problem. Remember, counting the defensive players is the only responsibility the Back Judge has before the ball is snapped.

And true, ASIJ would have been screaming about it if they had noticed it at the time, but it's not their responsibility; it's the responsibility of the Back Judge. Saying the player was removed once the Yokota coaches 'noticed' is pure conjecture unless you're the coach who noticed it. The only reason he seemed to leave the field is that the Yokota offence took over after ASIJ was forced to punt.

This is different than saying a hold wasn't a hold or clip wasn't a clip after watching a tape. This is a clear example of a ref failing to fulfill his responsibilities. Perhaps he's never been told he is the one counting the players? If so, then it comes down to poor training. Either way, it shouldn't happen.

And "What would be the point of intentionally putting a 12th man on the field?" Hmm, maybe stopping an offence. Think about it.

You have issues

Okay, yes it's the backjudge's responsibility to count the players, and yes he made a mistake. No way around it, he made a mistake.
The player in question was removed from the field two plays into the second defensive series by Yokota if you pay attention to the video.
Offence isn't a word, get a dictionary. The player was pulled out when the Yokota coaches noticed it if you pay attnetion to the video. Don't just type on emotions but think before you write.

GW its not the words its the content

Come on GW since you didn't like what they had to say you knock him for his spelling. Especially in the very next sentence...oh I won't do it...to easy. You were pretty emotional in your first response. Whether it was intentional or not there should be someone viewing the video and speaking to the back judge so it doesn't happen again.

Legitimate Issues?

Hold on GhostWriter. I wasn't even at the game but I'd say that any team would have a legitimate gripe if a foul went unnoticed for 6 or 7 plays. I would also say that most coaches would notice it after one or two plays. I doubt there was anything sinister going on, but I applaud Yokota coaches for pulling the player once they realized they were in the wrong.

I'm a teacher at Kinnick and I'll give you the same advice I give my students even though I suspect you're quite a few years out of school. When blogging, criticizing others for their spelling and/or word usage is in poor taste especially when your own writing is pocked with mistakes (e.g. "attnetion", "backjudge" - It should be two words and should be capitalized [sic].) Finally, 'Offence' is definitely a word. 'Offence' and 'Offense' are variants of one another. They're both both derivatives of the Latin 'offensa' and can be used interchangeably.

It's lost on GhostWriter...

You may not be here enough but if you do drop in once in awhile, you'll soon realize GhostWriter goes on 'attack' whenever his opinions or conspiracy theories are blown out of the water. He likes arguing with young kids even though he's one of the Yokota coaches. It's a bit of a joke and my bros at Zama love to push his little buttons.

Did I use correct spelling and punctuation GhostWriter?

Why doesn't everyone just

Why doesn't everyone just drop the issue.. Yokota realized it was wrong... so they stopped it. If it was really that big of a deal to hinder ASIJ's offense then the ASIJ coaches would have noticed it. Blogging isn't an English class and shouldn't be treated as one so who cares about spelling, but everyone needs to stop acting like middle school drama queens and just drop it

Legitimate Issues?

Well said,or should I say typed. That drives me crazy when GhostWriter and StripesandStars and others look for spelling errors.

Ghostwriter

I believe you just got "trounced"

Jomama, calm down, games

Jomama, calm down, games over your team won, the coaches took the player out. I know the coaches well and they would kick the butts of any players if they intentionally tried cheating the system.

Respect.

Good morning.

I just received an email from Dave that mentioned some of the posts regarding this issue. I feel compelled to respond as some people have taken issue with the integrity of the officials and Coach Pujol's coaching staff.

First, I have absolute faith in the professionalism and integrity of the officials we have on a week to week basis. It is very easy to pick apart a game on tape after it's been played. You will always find missed calls. Remember, you have four officials trying to watch 22 players who are in perpetual motion. Of course things are going to be missed once in awhile. And, although there may have been 12 players on the field for more than one play, it's simply an error by the official. It happens. You may be interested in knowing that the officials ask us for game tapes so they can review their calls and try to get better each week.

And, to suggest the officials sway their calls one way or another due to affiliation is ludicrous. They're out there doing their best and, in my opinion, they are above reproach. We always chat before and after the games and the crews we get are simply 'good guys' out on the field with the well-being of all players at the fore.

There isn't a coach in the Kanto league whose integrity I'd even consider questioning. While we, as coaches, get caught up in the excitement of the game, we're educators first and coaches second. We recognize that it's 'just a game' and that teaching fair play and good sportsmanship means a lot more than trying to gain advantage by cheating. So, if you're either insinuating or outright accusing Tim Pujol's coaching staff of doing something unethical, accuse all coaches on all teams as we all share the same philosophy.

Have fun with this blog, but please show a little class and don't throw gasoline on a fire that shouldn't be burning in the first place.
