Orny-
I appreciate the blog; it gives everyone the opportunity to post predictions and make comments. However, I do miss the articles in the sport section. Those articles make great keepsakes for the young athletes. Please add the articles again!
Upset
maybe a lil biase but look for my boy rapoza to come back strong with a vengance to lift the cougars over the falcons this friday at home to rejuvinate the cougars' pride in football after a yr of disappointment
I second your Upset
I too am biased, and I think the game at Osan WILL be a lot more interesting than what folks think. This is after all Korea, and teams can change drastically from year to year.
We expect a packed house with around 2K for the game, so come early as parking is at a minimum due to construction in the area. The colors black and Carolina blue are in vogue, so dress appropriately..
See you there Friday, under the lights.....
Upset did not happen, but looks promising.
27-0, Falcons: Dont let the score fool you... Cougars dominated on defense...
Cougars made a lot of first game mistakes (fumbles, special teams), and I would bet that JH went home wondering why his team was held to neg yardage for the second half, for the second game?
Lots to work on, but a lot of promising notes. Seoul will get beat this year by either Taegu or Osan.. Mark my word
Something to note: Seoul has had 2 first downs in 4 quarters of second half play this year. Yeah, they have won both games, but it is only a matter of time before hard work catches up with their numbers (yeah, they only suit 30, but they have more, a lot more... we suit 22-25, because that is all we have, they suit their first and second string).
Yokota vs. Edgren
Edgren isn't deep enough to cause any harm to Yokota. With only 19 dressed out this past weekend, they seemed to be out of shape to handle a tough hitting Kinnick team late in the game. Yokota should be able to run all over Edgren later in the game.
A-11
The offensive scheme A-11 is running wild across the football scene. Lets see who comes out with it first in the Far East. Isn't this what they run in the Canadian Football League?
Re: A-11
Actually, a version of the A-11 offense, 15 years ahead of its time, was run by Yongsan Dragons coach-offensive coordinator Bob Collins in the 1990s.
Five-receiver spread sets, shotgun formation, quarterback audibles the play at the line based on the defensive scheme, runs and reads while the receivers drive the secondary nutso.
David Page of Seoul American, later a starter at SMU, set single-game, single-season and two-season records that may never be broken operating out of that set.
Sort of equal parts Archie "Gunslinger" Cooley at Mississippi Valley State, Willie Totten to Jerry Rice/Run 'n' Shoot as expounded by Glenn "Tiger" Ellison of Massillon High in Ohio and spread through the pro and college ranks by the likes of Darrell "Mouse" Davis/spread option brought into vogue by Urban "Renewal" Meyer and others.
If Edgren, which incorporates parts of A-11 into its scheme, can master it completely, no defense in the Pacific is equipped to stop it.
That's why I'll go with Edgren at home against Yokota this year. They came within a point the last two seasons against the Panthers at Eagles Field. They play the Panthers at Yokota first. That'll show them what they have to do to beat Yokota in the rematch. Bet Edgren wins that one.
What?!
I honestly think that the Yokota Panther backfield will rip the edgren defense apart. There's too much talent in the backfield. Defenses will not know who to key on. Derick (Rookie Seward) has had back to back 150 yard games! Tony Presnell can do impressive things when given the opportunity. Rainey Dailey against Zama High broke a dive up the middle for a long touchdown. As we've seen before De'eric Harvin can throw the ball for TD's or can tuck his shoulder and create plays. If they manage to shutdown ONE of these options. Andy Silva has hands of gold. He can catch almost anything. Nothing against Edgren I just think that the Yokota offense is to dynamic. The offensive line is a little undersized however they make for it in speed and technique. Every starting member on the squad, has plenty of heart, and will NOT quit. Speed=Power and Yokota's backfield has displayed this in previous games. Yokota 28 Edgren 6.
Soo in conclusion my last words to my fellow bloggers is GO PANTHERS!!!!!!!!!!
Question
WOW,
I know that Yokota is good but all you talked about was, “Yokota's offense is going to run all over Edgren” but I have a Question, What about the Defense? You don't think that Edgren can't move the ball on Yokota’s Defense? What happen at Zama? And what happen when Edgren was at Home VS. the Devils? I think that this game maybe closer then 28-6.
Good Point
I do have to admit, that Zama did score once against Yokota. If i can recall correctly it happened in the late third or early fourth quarter. A couple of missed assignments and bad pursuit angles led to a 70 yard scamper by Emanuel Sloan (Zamas Quarterback) As for Kinnick, they did score on the Eagles, however in the season opener they did not score against Yokota which led to a 35-0 victory. Yokota's defense has proven that it can hold its own against formidable opponents. A well coached defensive line all credit to former NFL defensive tackle (Mike Miano) and a good linebacking core. Coverage has proven as somewhat of a difficulty in some cases. However it has not made a big impact. A few missed assignments is to be expected by ANY team. Yokota has had a few interceptions, many sacks and plenty of key stops. I think that the Panthers will keep riding the "undefeated" train whereas Misawa's stop is next. I stick by the 28-6 idea. GO PANTHERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go Eagles
Edgren,
Please avenge the previous generations of Eagles who have never beaten Yokota on the gridiron. Now it is time to dethrone the Panthers.
i think they can
i believe that edgren can do it this has happend year after year yokota has great players in their back field but twice edgren has matched them and barely lost by 1 point with some games having questionable calling. I think if they beat yokota on there homefield even if yokota beats them in the rematch it would hav already been set in stone that edgren was is the best team and are the ones to take down yokota. we've been denied twice it wont happen again edgren has grown the most out of all the football teams and are ready to take that #1 spot. but y cant the yokota look at edgren and give them the respect they deserve `and look foward to the good game that on its way.
GO EAGLES!!!!
Respect
I don't think that anyone on Yokota disrepsects Edgren, they expect to win just as Edgren should. Coach Waite has done great things up there.
However, if Edgren does beat Yokota, does that mean they are the best? I think that they would have to CONSISTENTLY beat Yokota to be considered the best team on the mainland. Nothing lasts forever and neither will the Yokota regular season winning streak, but one loss won't mean the end of being top dog.
That may be true
But if were just looking at one year then the one lost would make one team better than the other. No one second guesses if the number 1 100 meter sprinter loses its because the other runner was better than them but giving them props overall yes yokota is the best mainland team having proved it year after year but if edgren beats them then people would look back on this year completely unbiased of the actual situation and see that the win over yokota and think that edgren was the better team its a new season but tho the last 2 years yokota has proven to be the better team beating us and i wish i wuz there to lend my helping hand
IF
So what you're saying that is that if Edgren beats Yokota @ Yokota by 2 points, and Yokota beats Edgren @ Edgren by 19 points, Edgren is the better team? Hmm, not sure that makes any sense. If Edgren beats Yokota they'll go down as the mainland team to break the streak yes, but consistency is a different story. You can't use a track analogy because it's an individual sport.
And if the 100m sprinter wins 9 out of 10 sprints, he would be the best, right?
Yokota has proven to be better than Edgren for more than 2 seasons. However Edgren is a very good football team with excellent coaches, and 2 Far East Championships to prove it.
i admit it
you prove a very good point and i admit my defeat
but just a question not trying to sound smart but IF edgren beats yokota games would yokota drop down to the small schools championship instead of going to the large schools tournament?
thats a serious question im kinda confused about the process
Process
Large/Small school is decided by enrollment. 360 is the number for football, you have until the official enrollment reporting date (sometime in Sept. I believe) to declare if you are small or large. A small school can elect to compete with the large schools, but a lg school can't compete in small school tournaments (this is only pertaining to Far Easts). For the rest of the sports the magic number is 300. A school can declare small school for football but still be large school for all other sports (say an enrollment of 315 kids). However, for all other sports the declaration is the same. In other words you can't be large school basketball but small school soccer, all or nothing. IF Edgren beats Yokota, why would that make them drop down? It's not based on wins, but school/coaches decision.
I think they can also
I am with you on this one. The defense was a little tired last week but they should be ready this week. GO EAGLES!!
A-11
A-11 is a gimmick and not sound football. Anyone who runs it is looking for a quick fix and may get a few first downs with it, but teams can easily adjust.
A 11
Ghost writer,
Thank you for all your comments but this one I have to disagree on. The A11 has been around but has found its way back to the top. My question is this, Do you really think that a new system, coached right, will be easily defended after a couple of first downs? I don't understand....this same offense that was shown on ESPN? This same offense caused Coaches around the world to look into it the A11. (College, NFL, and High School) Come on Ghost writer...let us get out of the clouds and give respect were respect is do. I do agree someone placed their hand in the cookie jar, quickly trying to eat all the cookies before someone expose them. To bad I didn't think of it first...LOL.
Millionaire
If I thought of it first I could have been a millionaire publishing a book on it. However, I don't think A-11 is very solid, and it is based on a loophole in the rule book. That's why it's outlawed in several states.
A-11 is a gimmick, and will fade as other gimmicks do. It's NOT solid football. and is actually illegal in the NCAA and I think the NFL althought that's not for sure.
A-11 is Crap
Ghostwriter is correct, A-11 is a gimmick. Which coach will break under the pressure and go to this laughing stock of an offense? It is banned in the NCAA and NFL.
Defense
Don't dog on Yokotas defense...we've allowed 6 points in 2 games.. Edgrens giving up what like 26?(not exact)... don't say we're all offense, we play both sides of the ball as hard as we can and we have the w/l record to prove it
Big test for both teams
Yokota is an exciting team with a RB that averages about 20 yds a carry. Edgren is also great on O and both have stout defenses. Who wins? Up in the air. Edgren did give up 26 points last week, all in the 2nd half due to fatigue. But CW has a plan and they will be ready. Yokota? Need we say more? I think that we have established the fact that it will be a test for both teams. Whatever the case I am ready to see an exciting contest....be ready Yokota! Eagles let's go!
If fatigue is a factor, what
If fatigue is a factor, what makes you think that the players can get in shape over a one week time?
Run run
I said that fatigue WAS a factor. Factor accounted for, deal complete. GO EAGLES!!
I agree
I have to side with sports_fanatic on this one. Fatigue cannot be fixed in ONE week. That's something you need to take care of in Two-a-Days. If you want to take it easy then you'll pay for it in the regular season. Anybody who has ever played football before will know that you can not do anything, short of killing your squad, to get your team geared up, in one week. All of Yokota's defensive starters go both ways, except for (Ricky Seward defensive tackle). Yokota has had no fatigue issues so far. A few cramps here and there but nothing noticeable or anywhere near hurtful. Yokota's fatigue for sure is better then Edgren's which is evident. Kinnick scored many of it's points in the second half. Simple as that
I think sports_fanatic will say it with me GO PANTHERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Who's Tired?
I agree with all that fatigue cannot be fixed in one week but I said it was accounted for. The majority of the kids play both ways with the exception of a couple so they will be tired. There were some missed assignments and some blown tackles as well in the second half of that game that Kinnick ran up 26 points. This game will be good and I think it might be closer than we think. So LET'S GO EAGLES!!!
Good conversation, BTW!
Good Dialogue
Great conversation, and one thing is that it seems that both teams have a lot of pride, but also respect for their opponent. Edgren has proven to be the best team playing in the A category for 2 years, and Yokota has proven to be the best A category team playing in AA, as well as the best team in the mainland for 10 years.
Edgren should hope to win, but I doubt it will happen this week. They'll have a better chance at the end of the season on their home field after they have seen Yokota (not that they've done anything different for 10 years now), the distraction of travelling up there, and also the poor officiating they have.
Yokota backfield is doing great. Presnell may not be getting many yards per carry, but that's because everyone is keying on him, which gives Seward great breakaways on the counters. Soon they'll key on Seward and Presnell will get the big runs, as he did last year.
This may be the year Yokota wins it all...
Quallio
Dave,
Quallio is a great runner but come on, not many people are that interested in cross coutry. I know those kids work their tails off but let's get on with the exciting stuff. Making him the athlete of the year was anti-climactic, after all doesn't that traditionally go to a 3 sport athlete?
Re: Quallio
Not always has the Athlete of the Year gone to a three-sport athlete. Elbert Bailey, Kubasaki, 1989, Jamel Smith, Kubasaki, 1993, and Ray Lamb, Seoul American, 2001, were honored for football and wrestling. Melissa Calkins, Trinity Christian, 1994, was honored for basketball and track.
I make the final decision based on coaching nominees and other input. Aside from the requiste nominations (14 in total; next most had 9), Quallio had the numbers in both cross country and track, is an exemplary citizen in the classroom and the community and not to mention a great guy.
Maybe I'm one who sees the glass as almost full in everything, since I dig all sports, but ... What's not to like about cross country? Ask anybody who saw the final seconds of the Far East cross-country girls race last November; they'll tell you what "exciting" is. *smile*
XC
Cross Country takes a lot of dedication and they don't get the type of hooplah that other sports do. I sometimes wonder why in the world kids would want to go out and participate. They're true athletes and all the boys should wrestle!
Athlete of the Year
Just a thought, but you could do a Pacific Athlete of the Year, and also a Japan/Korea/Okinawa/Guam Athlete of the year seperate...
edgren
Truthfully, being from Edgren and playing on the team, this week as been the same as a hell week, all we have done is conditioning, you will see an Edgren team come out fit and ready to win. Edgren defence is better than you say, people dont realize the speed we have at the corners, along with an even faster strong safety, Edgrens coming out to end the streak.
Way to go
As well you should Edgrenhigh.
To piggyback
To piggy back on an earlier comment; no one is going to comment on losing...that would be insane!! Panther and Eagle pride is high and that's the way it should be! Each week there are new competitors and each week there are different comments. Everyone should keep their heads up! Yes, Yokota's streak will end eventually (look at what happen in the NFL last year) but I don't think it will be this week. Regardless of the outcome, both teams will be commended for their efforts (win or lose)! Yokota will always be #1 in my book...BLUE & GOLD forever!!!
Yokota's streak will end eventually
Yes it will... no one thought Osan would beat Seoul, but it happened two years ago.. with a close game against Seoul and Taegu last year (3-0).
All you can do is keep plugging and play hard.
28 hours till game time in Osan... Can't wait
See you there
haha agreed
All good things must come to end, but I don't see it happening soon.
Well Said
Okay, well I'm glad to hear that Edgren is working on all possible flaws. This is good news for the Panthers. It means we will have a challenge, this Friday. However if Edgren had a hell week this week where is there room to run plays and perfect offensive and defensive formations and schemes? I am glad to hear that they are working on weaknesses and I applaud them for that. I just think that it will take more then a week for them to get prepared for the Panthers. If the players have had grueling practices, then their bodies should still be recovering. A long trip from Misawa down to Yokota can take a toll on a team no matter how much you deny it you'll feel it in the game. I think Edgren has waited to long to try to whip their squad into shape as i stated before that is to be taken care of in two-a-days. As for the corners and safety we have a power back and speed back that should drive them up the walls! GO PANTHERS!!!!!!!!!
Panthers
I'm with you on that one, Go Panthers!! All the way this year!!
Campaign '08 the year 45 is here!
P.S. 24 hours til the Edgren Eagles are truly tested
TESTED?
If I am correct, Edgren got away with a lucky win last week. They were tested in the second half and they actually failed that test. Kinnick stuck it to them in the second half; where or not it was their lack of conditioning or not, 26 points to their 9 in the second half. I will say this, a "W" is a "W" no matter how they got it.
Yokota by far has the best team in the mainland and I would put them up against anyone in the Pacific; it all starts with their quickness at the line position. From what I have seen of Yokota, they have added to their game with the quickness and technique of their line play. If you have played or followed football in the Kanto for any ammount of time, you have to agree that this year's D-Line and O-Line are the best they have had. It has nothing to do with size, it's all about their techniques.
EHS's corners have speed?
What did KHS's quarterback have in passing yards against them? They may have speed but do they understand their coverages?
Yokota's quarterback will pick them apart with his multiple threat as a strong runnner and passer. EHS will be lucky to hold him under 100 yards in passing this week.
WIN IT FOR " Z "
considering that i played at edgren 07 and 06, i have a great deal of school pride and i really want them to win this one.....all of you should know that losing to yokota 2 years in straight by 1 points really hurts deep down. in the last loss i felt we would have won if i had played but i was serving a game suspension ( im z.latimore btw). if edgren can win this one they should win it for me......
GO EAGLES !!!!!!!
Come on Z
I enjoyed watching you play football and basketball but when you came to the Mainland; you wasn't suspended...you lost by even more. Not taking anything from you...they actually played better with you out of the game at Misawa.Continue all of your great endeavors at Pitt...we are still proud of you at Yokota!
Go Panthers....
i know we lost by more when
i know we lost by more when we went to yokota but that aint what i was talking about. i was talking about the last one point loss we had when i was suspended. Not takin anything from my boys they did play well without me but i feel if i had played we wouldnt be talking about a 50 game win streak. i know we got handled when we went to yokota, thats not even an aregument.... and for the record GHOST WRITER... no tantrum was thrown. i made an sarcastic remark ( using no hand gestures or profound language) that the ref obviously wasnt happy about. Im glad that you enjoyed watching me play but next time you post make sure you get your facts straight.....
GO EAGLES
Eyes of the beholder
You have your opinin of what happend with the officials and we have ours.
You again!
Naturally,
You have an opinion, doesn't everyone!
STREAK
The streak would still be intact; that streak is at home not away! And it will remain intact this week! PaNtHeRs! Go! fight! WIN!!!
Horrible Attitude
Win it for you...wow that's one selfish attitude. In your first chance you were suspended for a tantrum towards the officials, and in the second game you got rocked. It's clear Edgren played Yokota better WITHOUT you. Congrats on beating Taegu though.
Best of luck in all you're doing, you were a very good football player.
