Week 6 outlook
Friday
Japan
Nile C. Kinnick at American School In Japan, 7 p.m.-No question, the Mustangs can stay with the big boys. They’ll have to tighten their belts in the third and fourth quarters against Tyree Hunt and the Red Devils, the best second-half team in the region. … Mustangs 21, Red Devils 16.
Yokota at Zama American, 7 p.m.-Panthers righted themselves, at least in the first half, against the Mustangs, but clearly must take better care of the ball. Trojans are young and learning; Michael Spencer’s been a real find for them. … Panthers 21, Trojans 6.
Okinawa
Kubasaki vs. Kadena at McDonald Stadium, Risner Fitness & Sports Complex, Kadena Air Base, 7 p.m.-It’s do-or-die time for the Dragons, who must run the table to dethrone the defending champion Panthers and qualify for the Far East Class AA playoffs. Kadena’s defense, with 11 turnovers in the first two games, rules the night. … Panthers 22, Dragons 8.
Guam
Guam High at John F. Kennedy, 7 p.m.-Following Brian Sanders’ breakout performance against Father Duenas Memorial, the Panthers get better by feasting on the winless Islanders. … Panthers 18, Islanders 7.
South Korea
Osan American vs. Daegu American at Kelly Field, Camp Walker, 6 p.m.-Much will rest on whether the Warriors can sufficiently recover from injuries suffered in Saturday’s loss to Seoul American. But Daegu proved in that game that it belongs. … Warriors 13, Cougars 10.
Saturday
Guam
George Washington at Southern, 3 p.m.-Geckos continue to get well, should dispatch Dolphins rather handily. … Geckos 17, Dolphins 3.
Father Duenas Memorial vs. Simon Sanchez at Ramsey Field, John F. Kennedy High School, Upper Tumon, 7 p.m.-This should likely decide the Taga Division title and its accompanying first-round playoff bye. Friars won the first go-round, but Sharks are on fire (four straight wins) and FD struggled last week with Guam High. … Sharks 21, Friars 20.
Last week-7-0, 1.000.
Season-25-5, .800.

Trojan Football

What was touted as a new era in Trojan football seems to have evaporated into hot air (0-4). Especially, when you let a Class A team like Edgren beat you 42-0. Not to take anything from Edgren's football program, but what's going on at Zama HS.

Notwithstanding, it seems that an overhaul of the sports program at Zama HS is long over due. Apparently, it doesn't provide the necessary underlying foundation that serves as the glue for forging consistency amongst coaches, between the different sports teams, and the like, essential building blocks for establishing a successful sports program at Zama HS (i.e., sports philosophy, expectations, attitudes, etc.).

Until they start addressing these root causes of the problems that have plagued Zama HS for years, they will continue to be mediocre at best. Its starts with the principal and works its way down through the Athletic Director to the coaches and then to the players, parents, and community at large. For years, it has been a garden unattended.

Very Nicely Put

Nice Comment Sage. Zama normally has the best athletes in every sport but it is amazing that they can't put together better teams.

Exactly my point!

Exactly my point!

"Espically when you let a

"Espically when you let a Class A team like Edgren beat you" Are you kidding me?

are you kidding me

No he is not kidding you. Misawa kids dont realize that in the rest of japan there are somethings you dont do. Like go out pass curfew, become inegible, and lose to misawa. As a Yokota alum, thats just what we dont do, in any sport is lose to misawa. If you do, then there are plenty of jokes by the student body. Sorry thats just the title that Edgren has, in recent years its starting to fade because they are proving themselves as worthy opponents, however it is still something you just dont do.

What?

Past curfew? Eligibility status? What does that have to do with Misawa? I thought we were talking about football, not all these other things. EHS is doing well and people are noticing (and fearing as well.) Ask any of these kids who play football and they will tell you that all these things that they do not "realize" the Coach helps them to see and stay focused. Let's talk about sports, not all this other junk.

Credit

Edgren has become a lot more competitive in most sports. They deserve credit for that.

Espically

Hope that isn't a play on words, or could it be that the educational process missed you altogether!

Notwithstanding, I have the upmost respect for Edgren and their sports program and coaches, but their pool selection for athletes is smaller than Zama's. It stands to reason that Zama would have an competitive edge over Edgren based on said advantage. Therefore, for Zama to be stumped by Edgren, as was the case, it is noteworthy and begs the question why?

Aggie

I believe Legend was providing examples of things not to do on Yokota...not implying Misawa kids break curfew or are ineligible to play...

Got it

Same applies here, you best not be caught after curfew. What say you Legend?

38-13 ASIJ! great

38-13 ASIJ!

great leadership, determination, and focus by the mustangs

keep it up boys, you have made us all proud.

Osan at Daegu

This is the first time in my five years at Osan that the third game in the series actually takes on meaning. Injuries have affected both teams (at the QB position), and as Dave said after we lost our QB the first game against Daegu, the season doesn't end and we have to move on and make due. I am sure that Daegu will do so, and that the third game will be a great contest.

Props to the Cougars for showing that we not only have size and strength, but some speed as well.

Defense played solid, bending at times but not breaking. The lads had four picks and dropped 3 others. Job well done to Carl Ditty, Corey Peckins, Jon Carr, Mike Gilliam, Craig Perry, Tim and Travis Neher, Kenny Brown and Ryan Kelly.

Will Rapoza definitely showed why he is still one of the best all around players in the Pacific, with 3 picks and close to a 100 on the ground. Freshman Matt Brownell made some good carries, including one for 30+ yards and Mike Gilliam and Jesse Crockett did some hard running up the middle, gaining over 100 yards as a hard hitting tandem.

Adonte Murry played great filling the QB role, making few if any mistakes. 3 penalties for 25 yards, and no personal fouls... This is the stat I was most proud of.

Looking forward to the game on the 25th... Hope Trey is ok by then...

OSAN is going to play hard.

The third game for us is going to ba a hard fought one. The way I see it is if we can stay healthy Daegu will lose i know for sure that I should have my interseption stats up because I did drop two easy ones (Brown, #24). But our secondary did a great job last night and I'm very proud of all the people who stepped up and played their roles.

Mr. Dave Ornaeur

This comment isnt really related to this thread but i thought it was the most appropriate.
I have attended all ASIJ Mustang football games this season and I have to say that Alex Busam is quite something. He is a friend of my son's and is just a great kid on and off the field. But anyway, I have 2 questions.
1. Where would you rank him as a running back and overall player in the league this year?

2.Do you think he could excel in football at the Collegiate level and if so, at what level D1, D2, or D3?

Please let me know. Thanks. GO MUSTANGS!!!

Alex Busam

ASIJMustangFootball:

Unfortunately, I don't have his season stats, nor have I seen Alex play, so I'm not sure I could answer the question objectively. If his touchdown numbers are any indicator, he does know how to find a hole, how to bounce outside, how to break clear and how to finish a play.

And while the A-11 has surely helped ASIJ played to its strengths, it might also hinder Alex's ability to play at the D-1 level, since the A-11 is banned in college. However, there are a great many D-II and D-III programs with smaller players that play to their strengths by using spreads, run and shoots and variations of the 1980s Gunslinger, where Alex may be successful.

Others who have seen Alex play may wish to chime in?

Aggie

It was a play on words, meaning that there are things you dont do. LOSE TO EDGREN. If you read my post everything you said just repeats what i stated. Yes Edgren is playing better and getting respect, however us Panthers dont lose to edgren. ITS SOMETHING YOU DONT DO.

Wondering what happened to you Legend.

Got it. I am sure that no one wants to lose to Edgren. Just as we do not want to get beat. I course I repeated it, I was looking for clarification.
