Never before have Yokota's Warriors captured three Pacific-wide post-level basketball tournaments in one season. This year's group, paced by backcourt tandem K.D. Harris and Brandon Hawkins, might have a chance.
Hawkins netted 30 points and MVP Harris 28 as Yokota survived a tenacious Camp Casey squad to capture the title in the 22nd Osan Pacific-wide Holiday Tournament on Sunday at Osan Air Base, South Korea.
That gives Hawkins and Harris, along with weathered veterans Greg Streeter and Hamadi Stewart and Ricky Cabral, son of former Yokota three-time All-Force guard Ric Cabral, their second such title of the season. Yokota won its Warrior Classic in October.
This put the Warriors in position to win that big third one, either the Martin Luther King Invitational on Okinawa in January or on Guam in the March Madness Invitational at Andersen Air Force Base.
Moreover, it puts Hawkins and Harris front and center as possible additions to the All-Air Force team. Warriors coach and Air Force assistant coach Norzell Harris indicated that possibility after the Osan tournament.
Air Force tryout camp is slated for April 17-May 9 at Robins Air Force Base, Ga., with the All-Armed Forces scheduled for May 10-18 at Millington, Tenn.
Who knows? Maybe one or both will be named to Team USA, defending champion of the International Military Sports Council (CISM) tournament, this year scheduled for June 6-15 at Klaipeda, Lithuania.
