Life savers, big championship game leads, high school MVPs and other things MLK

Jackie Kershaw had quite the weekend in the Martin Luther King Invitational Basketball Tournament's revival.

Not only did she help lead Camp Red Cloud to the title 68-51 over Okinawa Mystics with 15 points and five steals. That came less than a day after she and four others rushed to the side of referee John Zivic, who suffered an on-court heart attack in a Sunday men's game.

Barry Celestine, the seven-time All-Marine and four-time All-Armed Forces guard, made his final MLK a memorable one, as coach of the Mystics and a player for One Time. Each of his teams finished second, One Time falling 97-77 to Camp Humphreys.

Despite the title, despite the finals performances of guards Lorenzo Thompson (32 points, 12-for-14 at foul line) and Jamar Pitts (26 points, five three-point goals), Humphreys did not place one player on the All-Tournament team.

Speaking of which, how about that Jamil Barney? The Kadena High School junior made history by becoming the first prep player in tournament history to earn Most Valuable Player honors. As voted by the tournament coaches.

Each of the championship games had much in common. Each victor led their respective game by 26 points, and each team went on runs of 10-0 or more.

Keep praying for John Zivic.

An enjoyable weekend. Hoping 30 teams make the tournament next year.
