Pacific high school soccer Top Ten, pre-KAIAC Tournament edition

Forgive the silence the past couple weeks. Sure was nice to spend time in the States. Into the home stretch we go, with the Korean-American Interscholastic Activities Conference tournaments upcoming Friday and Saturday:

Boys
 1. Seoul Foreign (17-0). Congrats to Crusaders on yet another APAC title, and to senior Remco Rademaker shattering the Pacific's single-season goal-scoring mark. He has 51 heading into KAIAC.
 2. Kadena (6-5). Four-match winning streak, including 2-1 win Saturday over Mil United.
 3. Christian Academy In Japan (3-0). Leo Kobayashi with nine goals in three matches. Same stuff, different season.
 4. Yongsan International-Seoul (11-1). Guardians boys are having the finest year in the school's history in all sports.
 5. Kubasaki (2-8). Dragons looked like their competitive selves in 7-0 shutout Wednesday over Okinawa Christian International. They're starting to feel it.
 6. Zama American (7-1). Spencer Clark appears to be as good a finisher as he is a playmaker.
 7. Yokota (8-2). Another rising freshman star to watch for in Andrej Gomez..
 8. Seoul American (8-3-3). Catching the white-hot Crusaders may be too tough a task.
 9. Nile C. Kinnick (5-3-2). Don't sleep on Pornchai Nonphayak (7 goals) and this Red Devils unit.
10. Seoul International (6-4-2). Jason Park (16 goals) and the Tigers could use a second finisher.

Girls
 1. Seoul American (14-0-1). Neutralise Erica Anglade, Sarah Eades and Angye Law, you still have Jessie and Katie Bolander to deal with.
 2. American School In Japan (5-0). They've outscored opponents 27-0, but it's also the play of versatile defender Melissa Walker that's carrying the Mustangs..
 3. Kubasaki (8-4). Great weekend blanking Nago and FC Unai. They're not just staying with higher-level competition; they're beating them now..
 4. Yokota (10-2). Doing well despite the loss of striker Courtney Richards (ankle).
 5. Zama American (8-2). Likewise doing OK without Aubrey Ashliman (knee surgery Tuesday at Yokota). Mallarie Ashliman, her freshman sister, has 18 goals and seven assists.
 6. Kadena (7-5-2). Three losses and a tie in last four matches.
 7. Faith Academy (15-1). Vanguards captured title in 2nd Cutts Cup thanks to the play of goalkeeper Mary Shaw, three goals allowed in five matches, all wins.
(tie). Nile C. Kinnick (6-1-2). Who'd have thought after the Red Devils lost Tara Bartkoski and Frances Zukowski that they'd be this good?.
 8. Matthew C. Perry (6-4-2). Taylor who? Karla Stroud (12 goals) is living large after moving from defense to forward to take transfer Taylor Dunphy's spot.
 9. Daegu American (9-3-1). Warriors are 3-0-1 since the break and doing well despite losing Sarah Eades to Seoul American and Kat Nufable to graduation. Morgan Calisto (9 goals) leads the way.
10. Osan American (12-4-2). Losing 1-0 to Daegu and Taejon Christian International hurt.
(tie) Seoul Foreign (14-5-4). Matched the Crusaders boys by capturing the APAC tournament title in Kobe, Japan. Karen Lee (16 goals) is emerging as this team's top finisher.

Your thoughts? Shout it out! And remember, you've entered THE "No-Hate Zone." *smile*

Yokota 3 - Zama 0

Guess you're going to have to swap out #6 and #7 on the boy's list as the freshmen and sophomore rising stars scored another three goals in shutting out the Trojans at Bonk Field tonight - and it wasn't as close as the score would indicate.

Yokota v.s Zama

you are right. the game was much closer than the score revealed. Yokota did prevail in the end but the referee's decisions and play calling were not of the best. The fact of them not stopping the game for injured players, calling fouls on the wrong team, and worst of all giving a player a yellow card and a red card because the referee supposed that player already had a previous yellow card shows that they were not paying close attention nor knew what they were doing. Might i add they continued the game when the ball hit the top of the field goal post. hats off to yokota on their shut out. Lets see what happens in a fair game next time.

Blame the Referees!

Nice try blaming it all on the referees, but the score was 3-0, not 1-0, and Zama had three free kicks awarded to them in the Yokota half of the field in the last 5 minutes of the game, none of which they converted.

Jersey's

In the referee's defense...black numbers on a dark maroon jersey....not smart. BE THE REF, DON'T BEAT THE REF. Applications now being accepted.

Jersey

yeah black on maroon definitely is not a good combination.

they got lucky

yokota got lucky beating zama tuesday night.,
i dont know how they did it but man that must have been all luck :)

Best of 3

I believe that Yokota and Zama play once more this season. The series is tied so let's see what happens. No whining about the refs, just play better.

"blaming the refs"

Well the refs did let one boy lay on the field for about 5 minutes before blowing the whistle. He looked dead at him at the ground and turned his head then i guess 5 minutes later he happened to see him? There were unnecessary yellowcards and a redcard after the game. Seriously a red card AFTER the game. And if there is a 3rd gamei guess we'll see what happens then.

5 MINUTES!!!

Were you even at the game? I have one suggestion, be a ref, don't beat the ref! I see some names in here that represent that some of you might be referees, However from your comments I believe you are not or atleast haven't reffed much. MYC, definately not a ref when DO has to "explain" the 50/50 meaning....I know DO has atleast reffed one game, and now has a whole new appreciation for what a referee/umpire go through. Redcard after the game...completely warranted. I guarantee if his mom/dad was standing there as I was, he wouldn't be playing anymore. Now for the reality...DJPolaski, a player from Zama, rose above all the adults and gave an honest assesment of the game. One in which I agree...If you are inside the 6, and the only person between you and the goal is the keeper and you miss...well, read his post. Way to go DP for not being sucked into the adult converplaint discussion. Lastly, if you would like to join the referee crew PLEASE contact Mark at Zama or Dan at Yokota. Ask around to get the last names because I am not putting them here with all this violence. BE THE REF, DON'T BEAT THE REF!!!!!

Enough about the referees

All: A gentle reminder about what we're here for. This is THE "No-Hate Zone." Enough about the referees. They call games well; they call games not so well. A referee once told me, "We do a job in which we please 50 percent of the people 50 percent of the time." Just play hard. If you leave it all on the field, no shortcuts, there should be no excuses, no regrets. Let's move on. Thanks. :)

Dave, the referee who said

Dave, the referee who said this has low expectations of his/her job - if you are content to call a game that will meet half the standards only half the time - then they shouldnt be doing this and getting paid for it (I'll bet I'll hear about how low they get paid now). There are some refs that we all grudginly concede and approve that he/she has made consitent calls even if the majority was against us. Its the referees that call games "not so well" that shoudnt be calling at all if they cant be consistent; and the unprofessional ones that make really dumb, blatant calls be held accountable, censured and sent back for recertification/training. You want to hear a good one? What about this ref at KAIAC that blows the game whistle just right before the player could kick a penalty indirect 20 yds out, potentially tying the game, for whatever petty reason or disagreement he had with those boys? You play hard, leave it all on the field, then someone steals it away from you.

Re: The referee who said ...

Pleasing 50 percent of the people 50 percent of the time = the team that wins and their fans. The other 50 are on the short side of the score. That's what the referee meant to say. *smile*

well if you read carefully

i didnt blame the reffs 100% i just stated that they were in deed a big factor and I also never said the score was 1-0 did I?

Zama Vs. Yokota

Refs did have a big factor in the game but it was not the deciding factor. A red card after the game is completly ridiculous. Yokota refs need to read their rule books a little more carefully. Anyways, the game did end in a 3-0 victory for yokota; however, in the second half zama dominated the game. Yokota got a few lucky breaks and capitalized on them, not to mention the mistakes from Zama's goal keeper. If Zama had been able to finish their opportunities the game would have been much closer. There was a shot from the side with the goalkeeper out that hit the post and bounced out, and also header that went right to the goalie that should have been a goal as well.

People need to stop only looking at the statistics and actually look at who is dominating the game. Players from zama are being overlooked because they are not always scoring or getting assists. I'd like to see some reports on what actually happens at the game not only the outcome of the game.

Red Card Primer

How to earn a "completely ridiculous" red card following a game in 3 easy steps:

1) Immediately following a game in which you have already been verbally warned for dissent, approach the group of referees who are leaving the field and begin to make sarcastic comments about their refereeing ability, applauding and clapping in full view of a number of players, coaches, and spectators as you do so.

2) After the referees thank you politely for your feedback and keep heading off the field, exclaim "You S***" in a loud voice that can be clearly heard by a number of players, coaches, and spectators.

3) After you are subsequently awarded a caution, don't think to yourself, oops, maybe I pushed this a little too far and I'd really like to play in the next game, so I should probably keep my mouth closed at this point of the evening; instead, get really upset at the unfairness of it all and in a loud voice that can clearly be heard by a large number of players, coaches, and spectators, let the referees know they are the worst referees in the history of the world.

I sincerely hope some players who might otherwise have gotten themselves in trouble in the future read this and think of it in the future if they find themselves in a similar situation. Most referees I know are aware of what we like to call a "temporary loss of control in the heat of battle" and give players a chance to come back to their senses if they quickly get themselves back under control. A verbal warning is almost always sufficient in these cases.

well let's see

Yeah I agree that the score does not always show how the game was played, but in all honesty, the score is all that matters in the end. You can't win a game if you can't finish and that's what we had trouble doing that night. Hopefully we'll come up with a victory next week when we meet again at Bonk :)
