ASIJ Volleyball

Being a veteran 4 year varsity athlete, Gwen pulled the volleyball team together this year, and finished her highschool volleyball career with the gold medal that she deserves. Not only should she be Far East athlete of the season, she should definitely be considered for the Far East athlete of the year. She holds more track&field records then anyone else in the history of the league, and she dominates on the volleyball and basketball courts. Plus Dave forgot to mention that she was named MVP for the Far East volleyball tournament.

Re: ASIJ Volleyball

MVP reference now included.

Congratulations to the Mustangs and to Gwen.

Bring on wrestling!

Kyle Sprow

This is the Second year in a row hes won tennis singles! He deserves some credit. Having a football player run a great play doesnt make his fall athlete of the quater. He has achieved so much and has been consitant and a good player. There is a big difference in athletes that play with a team and an athlete that plays by himselft. Kyle being by himself on the field where it is one on one the only person to pump himself up is himself. The only person to affect the outcome of the match is him. I give my props to him! GOOD JOB!

Trin or Willie

I would say the athlete of the quarter would have to go to Trin and Wiliie.

I say Trin because he has put up some good numbers this year and he's a big part of the reason why Seoul won Far East this year. Big players step up and do big things in the big games and he did that. He didnt get that much recognition last year because he had to share carries with Tez and myself, but when he did get to carry the ball, he made some big plays. I think he is probably the best defensive player in the pacific. He had a interception in every game we played in last year and hes a great open field tackler. He also made the game winning tackle to win Far East.

I wouldnt be surprised if Willie won becuase hes one of the best athletes in the pacific and he did so many great things this year. You would have never guess this was his first year playing football. I just wish he would have played last year.

Sprow for Athlete of the Quarter

Kyle Sprow should get it!

He is a two time individual champ and doubles champ too. I agree with pantherpride, it takes more than a good run or good hit to be named the athlete of the quarter. Unlike football he has no one to rely on. The match is complety on him, and he won it alone, twice. Hard work and dedication has made him the athlete he is today n he has earned it.

For girl maybe the osan vollyball girl or elisa mason?

Derick "Rookie" Seward, football, Sophomore, Yokota.

It's hard to believe that "Rookie" was not mentioned in this spectacular roll call of fabulous athletes. He played varsity last year as a freshman rushing for over 600 yards, this year he is the Japan Football leading rusher (correct me if I'm wrong) with over 1500 yards and he was not even mentioned? Hmmm. I know he's not a senior and the team did not win the championship, but he had one heck of a season and my thinking says that he has earned at least a nomination. He surpassed all of the personal goals he had set for himself. He stepped up his game in the midst of injuries to other key players and never complained, he gave 100% all of the time without ever quitting.

How do you determine your nominees? What criteria has to be met? -- I'm just curious...

Re: Derick "Rookie" Seward, football, Sophomore, Yokota.

BTW, Sprow and Mason are juniors. The nominees do not necessarily have to be seniors. That particular group of nominees either won individual Far East tournament championships or helped their teams achieve a measure of greatness, either winning a Far East Tournament or coming close to it (as in tournament MVP Rachel Schulz of Class A volleyball runner-up Morrison Christian Academy).

Definitely, Rookie deserves tremendous props. He didn't just lead Japan in rushing; he led the entire Pacific in rushing yards (1,536 yards, 12 touchdowns, 152 carries, just over 10 yards per touch) and all-purpose yards (1,970). Great individual accomplishment. And the Panthers did win their record 10th straight DODDS-Japan and Kanto Plain football titles. But came up just short in their bid for a second Class AA football title game berth. Hence, why his name was not on the list and why I created an "other" category, which sort of serves as the write-in process in SportsBlog Nation. Thanks for weighing in. :)

Thanks for your reply...

Thanks, Dave for your reply and explanation -- I think all of Yokota feels a little better now that you have explained your thought process and I can't say that I disagree. Well, he is a sophomore and he will have plenty of other opportunities to make your list in years to come...

On to the basketball court we march.....

Celine Baldevia - MVP or Banner?

Although I know Rachel's abilities and skills quite well, I am one who believes that for one to be selected as the MVP from a losing team they must be the absolute knock-down, stand-out, heads above the rest type of athlete...one who is clearly the most important not only for their team but the type of athlete every coach would clear a spot for on their bench, even if that meant displacing their best player. I don't believe that was the case in this year's Far East (nor was it last year)...I believe that if you truly had the best player (all things being equal - and for Morrison they certainly are) then you should have won, particularly when the DoDDS schools compete in team sports where chemistry and continuity are such critical factors for success otherwise you wouldn't see everyone jumping for joy when the DoDDS school finishes 7th (as is the case with Class AA)...I do not wish to turn this into an athlete bash, however. Rachel didn't ask to be MVP, nor did Celine last year. They were chosen by coaches who often try to manipulate and politic to get their athletes chosen. Rachel is a stand-up kid and a great athlete. She stood out immediately as a 9th grader and never looked back...my hat is off to her and I was very proud of Celine to hear how she handled everything - she knows the deal...all class athletes do.

DoDDS schools do quite simply have more hurdles to face in terms of building winning programs and having an athlete like Celine makes those hurdles more bearable. She levels the field and makes a contribution in each and every sport for which she is a member because of her skill, quiet intensity, and determination. She is a a difference maker, pure and simple and without her the championships of the past two years would not have been possible.

While the repeat is surely a great accomplishment, most would agree that last year's field was far more competitive overall than this year (ISSH, Faith, and Morrison, all had strong teams) and Celine was still able to rise to the top of that crop posting similar numbers as she had this year.

When you think about MVP's, think about championships; for Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, Bret Favre and the like - ask them which meant more - winning an MVP or winning a championship;I can assure you that the latter was what they were after. So, after all of this debate subsides and the MVP's and Athletes of the Quarter and Year are selected the only things left will be the two championship banners in the gym that Celine helped hang and I bet if you ask Celine which is more important you'll get the right answer as well...Great Season.

MVP

I believe Shultz was above the other players during Far East. Celine had a great season. I saw about 6 of her games, but during Far East Shultz stood out. Osan has a great team (Sparks, Celine, Vega, and others( sorry but I don't remember all their names (still great players) but Morrison had the best player. Without her Morrision would not have made it to the final unlike Osan which still would have been there.

I also agree with Dave that they don't necessarily have to be on the team that finishes #1. Far East Basketball last year had a lot of good Teams, but Brandon Spencer (Daegu which finished 6th) was the best player out there. Without him, Daegu would not have been competitive.

Celine for Athlete of the Quarter!

This blog is for Athlete of the Quarter right? While we're on the topic of Far East Tournament let me share this with you. Here are the facts straight from the tournament stats: Celine had 116 kills, Rachel did top her here with only 14 more BUT they played 4 extra entire matches than Osan, so Celine would have had more than Rachel if Osan would have lost a match sooner, definitely. Celine had 102 assists, Rachel did not make the leaders list. Celine had 21 blocks, Rachel did not make the leaders list. Celine had 79 digs, Rachel did not even make the leaders list. These are facts, you decide! Celine leading in all these categories clearly makes her most valuable all around player of the tournament, you cannot disagree with these numbers. Rachel is a good player, not to take anything away from her she was a good hitter but you cannot argue statistical facts and the number of categories Celine leads. No matter what place team the MVP comes from, stats cannot lie!

Back to the real point of this blog....Celine definitely deserves athlete of the quarter. She is the model, all around student-athlete. Her grades are exceptional. Her leadership skills are outstanding. Her athletic skills in any sport she attempts are amazing. I am sure her season volleyball stats support that too contrary to "Academyparent" observations. No one is more deserving. Good Luck Celine :)

Far East MVP

1. The reason I responded to the FAR East comment in this section is because VBall coach iniatiated it. I had previously made the same post when Dave had opened it up in another blog.

2. I just believe during the tournament Shultz carried her team more and like I mentioned before Osan still would have been there at the end with or without one of their "big three" (Osan is a great team)

3. Even though stats are a good indicator of success it doesn't necessary mean they're the "MVP" , which means most valuable player not most stats.

4. Finally, the bottom line is the coaches decided on the MVP and Shultz received more votes.

why keep stats is you're not going to use them?!

1. I know Celine had better stats than anyone else at the tournament. Why keep them if you're not going to use them. That's what they're for. After each match they had to be turned in.
2. Why should Celine be punished because Osan had a solid team with a few other great players and Rachel didn't have as many? It's not Celine's fault she is a good leader and challenged her team members to be better throughout the year as a leader should.
3. It is my understanding coaches voted well before the tournament even ended. (I may be wrong on this one) How can the MVP be chosen before the end of play? It's the overall tournament right?! Majority of coaches came up to Celine after the tournament to tell her she was the true MVP. Obviously the coaches true votes didn't shine through, or they wouldn't have come up to her to say that.

.....now on to ATHLETE OF THE QUARTER

Having said our peace about Far East, lets focus on what is the focus here, Athlete of the Quarter. Academyparent is right, the award was given at Far East and there is nothing that will change that this year. I hope in the future the coaches are able to clearly agree on the criteria for that award well in advance. That would eliminate many disagreements, in my opinion, hopefully.
Athlete of the quarter is over the entire quarter, August to November. I believe qualities of leadership, sportsmanship, grades and natural athleticism should all factor in to this over all decision. Stats should play a part but an equal part to the above qualities. Celine has all of these qualities and has had them for the past few years too. She has grown with them too. I hope she is able to continue on to the next level if she chooses. I believe she has the qualities. She's a very fun player to watch cause she's constantly improving too. Good Luck Celine.

SFS, Britney Rader

SFS didn't drop a set the whole year, and she won best hitter and mvp for kaiac, if it goes to someone in girls volleyball it has to be her.

Celine for Athlete of the Quarter!

I think it has to be a bigger award than just "not dropping a set" in my opinion. It's the best "Athlete" of the Quarter, not just hitting.

I believe Rader and Celine

I believe Rader and Celine probably had similiar seasons and the one advantage that Rader/SFS had would be "not dropping a set" for the year. SFS finished first in KAIAC so does that mean the "Volleyball Athlete of the Quarter" has to come from the 1st place team. In your using your logic from your earlier post then Celine should not finish first. I can almost bet that Rader had similiar stats for the season after seeing her play a few times this year.

Again I think Celine is an awesome player but there a few others who stack up with her. Also you mention she is a great student, person, etc..., I'm sure all others mentioned above fit into that same category or they would have not been nominated.

I don't believe this award should be based on stats alone

I do not know a comparison between stats on these two great players but Athlete of the quarter is a different award that should not be based on stats alone, in my opinion. I believe it's the best all around representation of an athlete. However, after seeing these two up against each other numerous times this season. Celine is the more deserving athlete based on performance, sportsmanship and leadership.

Best Female Volleyball Player

Whether Celine or Britney are the best volleyball players in Korea, it would be very difficult to use statistics, as SFS played fewer sets. They also play different positions. Celine has to set in a 6 2, therefore getting fewer opportunities to hit. Regardless, what I really do not understand is the talk of Britney, when she is not even the best player on her own team. I believe the best player's name is Rhoda. Why is Rhoda ignorred? I can't be the only one thinking this. I think it is wrong. Sorry Rhoda. What a shame.

good point!

I agree Rhoda is a better choice for that particular team. Better "all-around" player.

Alexander for athlete of the quarter

It says that Alexander only has 17 touchdowns but i know for a fact he has about 20 of them. People must have forgot about the 3 kickreturns he had this season.

Rhoda is Fantastic

I agree...Ariel Rhoda is a tremendous player and has been since she stepped off the plane from Texas. She has the best court awareness of just about anyone I have seen in a very long time. She definitely has the skills to play at the next level, particularly Libero. I'd write her a recommendation in a heartbeat.

Johnell

Johnell Alexander deserves to be athlete of the quarter. no other player in football this season did as much as he did on ALL SIDES of the ball. This article gives him only 17 out of the 20 touchdowns he had this season. TWENTY!!! 14 rushing, 3 receiving, and 3 returns. He also had 6 interceptions on defense, and racking up over 40 tackles. He couldnt have done anymore than this. He lead Edgren to one of the best seasons it has had in a long time, and a 3rd consecutive championship. Athlete of the quarter? Look no further than Johnell Alexander

Having played against both,

Having played against both, I'd have to say give it to Seoul's runningback Stansel. Ya he might not have as many touchdowns, but he's a leader for the team. He had the sportsmanship and the skill to earn my vote.

Athlete of the Quarter

Brittney Rader should be added to list of candidates for Athlete of the Quarter. Her performance in leading the Seoul Foreign Crusaders to a 25-0 record, APAC and KAIAC Championship and a run of 70 consecutive undefeated sets in a row was dominating. She set a school record with 334 kills on 648 for a .412 kill percentage. She also served at 92% with 71 aces and had 44 block points. Finally, she was named MVP, Best Hitter and Best Server at the KAIAC Tournament as well as being named All-APAC. She will be attending Asbury College on a volleyball scholarship next fall.

Agreed but can we see Ariel Rhoda's stats

I agree that Brittney is a fantastic player but I would like to see Ariel Rhoda's stats as well. In my opinion she has been the impact player for SFS for the past 4 years. Without her, that streak of 70 sets would not have been possible, particularly her ability to pass and play defense.
