Say a prayer for Richard L. Ornauer, my father and one of my journalism mentors

New traffic on here is going to slow considerably for the next couple of weeks.

My father, Richard L. Ornauer, 86, has suffered a series of strokes which have left him paralysed on his right side and unable to speak.

He is hospitalised in Dover, Delaware, where I will likely head later this week or early next week.

Please pray for him, pray for his doctors and their wisdom in caring for him, and pray that my dad will encounter fortunate circumstances as he prepares for his next life's mission.

I love you, Pop. Fight on.

Your father

Your father and I were neighbors in Dover until I moved three years ago. I'm also a reporter for The News Journal in Wilmington, Del., and so have dealt with your father on both a personal and professional basis.
A year ago I was diagnosed with cancer, and your father expressed his concern about my condition. When I completed treatment and got back to work, he congratulated me and said he was glad to see my stories in the paper again. He's a good man.
Please convey my best wishes to your father and his family. You all will be in my prayers.

One of my first bosses

I read recently that your father passed away. I was sorry to hear that. Dick was one of my first bosses at the L.I. Press where I started as a copy boy while attending St. John's in Hillcrest. I went on to become a cub reporter and then assistant to your father. He was a great man and journalist. He had a terrific sense of humor. Looking back I remember his string ties. No one could say he was a conformist. Dick forced everyone working on the Nassau beat to know that BOCES was in and VEEB was out. I also remember in the mid-60s we were saddened when he had a heart attack. I went to visit him several times at the North Merrick house (I also lived in NM). We took little walks. He said the episode really sapped his energy. But he came back strong and lived a good life for many more years.
Journalism was your father's profession, education was his love. Many people today owe him a debt of gratitude for all time he volunteered to improve their educations.
Always remember, the day will come for everyone when the -30- is put on the end of their story. Stay well and God Bless. (I know I met you either at the office or at your home many years ago)
