Musings, mutterings and the occasional schmahts as Ornauer wonders if we're staring at Kadena-Seoul Class AA football title-game Classic No. 3:
-- I say again, that's why they play the games on the field, not in the newspapers or the blogs. I mean, who saw Seoul American 15, Guam High 0 coming?
-- Didn't think so.
-- I mean, a team 7-2 team entering Tuesday's Class AA semifinal that averaged 24 points per game held to 132 yards and gets no further than its foes' 18-yard line? Gets into Seoul territory four times, turns it over on downs three times and tosses an interception?
-- And Seoul American, which suffered its school-first losing regular season, got outscored 56-99 in six games and lost the season series to Class A runner-up Daegu American for the first time?
-- It was clear at Mike Petty on Tuesday that the Falcons totally drank the Kool-Aid (and Gatorade, water and anything else that would keep them from cramping), bought into the idea that the Class AA playoffs are a whole new season and played like it. Especially on defense.
-- At the very least, it was a solid coming-out party for guys like Han Yoo, Jamal James and Brandon Morton. And they're young, which means we could see a return to DODEA Korea League glory for the Falcons as soon as next season.
-- So, now we await Saturday's Round 3 between old nemeses Kadena and Seoul American. The two have met twice in Class AA title play, with the Falcons winning both. Will the story be different with the game on Okinawa this time? Kadena beat Seoul 27-10 in the 2007 Class AA semifinals. If that's an indication, etc.
-- That Guam High rushing star Jason Brunson injured an ankle on the first play didn't help the Panthers any. You could easily see he was tentative after that, tip-toeing and stutter-stepping instead of bulling ahead. That forced the Panthers to go primarily to the air. Hope Brunson, one of the Panthers' "Three Caballeros," is OK for Saturday's bronze-medal game with Yokota.
-- Is it just me, or have the crowds at Mike Petty for Monday's and Tuesday's semifinals been S-P-A-R-S-E? Mostly opposing coaches and players. I mean, c'mon! The Class A title game drew hundreds. From all up and down the Korean peninsula (well, at least until the intersection of 38th and Parallel). Sure hope Saturday's turnout is more to a title-game's liking.
-- Speaking of Seoul men, understandably worried was Falcons cross-country coach Steve Boyd about what kind of boys' team he'd be bringing to the Far East meet, what with Anthony Catineau and Andrew Murphy down with the flu and missing the Korean-American Interscholastic Activities Conference meet.
-- But healthy they were for Far East this week, and Catineau especially proved a difference maker as the Falcons put four teams in the top 10 of the team relay standings and captured their second straight overall team title in the Far East meet at Gosser Memorial Golf Course, Misawa Air Base, Japan.
-- Why didn't boys 3.1-mile champion Thomas Kim and girls 3.1-mile champion Siarria Ingram run as a pair? Holmes might say, "Elementary, my dear Watson." Boyd chose to go the depth route rather than put his eggs in too few baskets. His goal was to get as many pairs into the top 10 as he could, and if one of them could win the relay gold, so much the better. But the former was priority. And it worked to perfection.
-- Two straight Far East titles for Boyd, who formerly taught and coached at Misawa's Robert D. Edgren High School. Guess you can come home again. :)
-- Chasity Cordova of Kadena may have come away empty in the girls' 3.1-mile individual race, finishing second, second and third the last three years,, but she set a bit of Pacific history with her third straight team relay gold medal ... with a different guy each year, Brant Casteel in 2007, Patrick Edwards in 2008 and Jacob Bishop on Tuesday.
-- And another tip of the cap to Osan American, which swept all three team events in the Class A competition and made David Hemmer a two-time Far East Class A champion coach; he and the Cougars wrestling team won those honors last February. Nicole Solomonson and Josh Hanks placed second in the team relay, the best finish ever by a Class A pair.
-- Does Ma Nature have a grudge against the Far East Tennis Tournament? Four of the last six playing days the last two years, rain has visited the event, and on Tuesday made its presence known resoundingly with two lengthy rain delays. Using the Thursday rain delay for a second straight year is now a distinct possibility.
-- Predictable the singles brackets have become; all four of the top seeds in each of the girls and boys brackets made Wednesday's semifinals.
-- Falcons visited once again, this time on the Class AA volleyball courts, where Seoul American, which was supposed to be "all that" next year when Liz Gleaves and Destinee' Harrison are seniors, downed pre-tournament favorite and senior-laden Nile C. Kinnick in straight sets at Guam's Andersen Air Force Base. Could it be that the Falcons and Red Devils might meet at Center Court on Saturday?
-- Daegu American certainly righted its ship on Tuesday after losing Monday to Morrison Christian Academy, sweeping its pool-play matches and earning the second seed in the Class A volleyball tournament double-elimination playoffs. One of the Warriors' victories Tuesday -- a come-from behind triumph over perennial contender International School of the Sacred Heart.
Two days down. Four to go. 104 days (actually 103, since this is being posted past midnight).

CONGRATS TO THE FALCONS!
Who saw it coming?
I saw it coming Mr. Dave!
I had been telling people all year that what happened in Seoul was nothing but a flook! SAHS has tradition of winning. I believe last year at the basketball playoffs Coach B said, "...here at seoul american, tradition never graduates!..." thats is soooo true!...I had faith in my boys despite what the media said or people from other schools emailing me while im here in the US telling me how SAHS was terrible this year. It all went in one ear and out the other one. This is not an angry email so don't get the wrong impression. I'm just excited to see my boys prevail despite all the hardships they hadd to suffer. I'm wearing my jersey to school when they play for the championship!
**SMILE**
Lets go Falcons!
This new has made my day!

It is inevitable Sahs breeds champions
What happened in the past is over, but when it comes to winning when it matters, you know SAHS will prevail, there is no one better int he pacific then the falcons. If another outcome occurs when we lose, just like Ocho-Ocho said it has to be a fluke*
Sahs gets it in!
ima let yall in on a lil secret
ok!! check this out. I am a captain for Seoul American high school, but im no where near simple minded or one sided so ima break it down. We didnt do great at all and sucked in the eyes of a person that does not know football. but to a football player, or atleast a competative one, we are a great team that just was young and could never hold on to the wins because we were new to this. now all our games we played were good games and had more fans than ever because we entertained regardless. in our minds we were working for one thing and thats far east. we went threw alot with teachers and everybody downing us and giving us no support. but the good thing is just like last year the first thing every body told me when we got to yokota was" i heard yall lost to the smallest team in the school" lol. but every body knows the story of how the falcons changed the whole script. so what im going to say is the regular season means nuthing Guam made the same mistake yokota and kadena did last year and thought we were a joke. but now the jokes on them see where iim going with this?
so with that being said
i will say this kadena has a great offensive back field one of the best. Seoul has the most heart out of anybody and has the press on our side because of the Guam massacre that took place on tuesday. our defense is the hardest hitting defense that has come threw Kadena, but i feel kadena will manage. we have Jamal James who sent a boy from taegu paralized off the field on a stretcher #21. then you have demetrius johnson# 6. Enough Said. you have Malcolm Horne mr. prime time#86. and the all far east Han Yoo. who will hit anything that moves. not to mention the nastiest back field also. so trust this game will be played til 00:00 is on the clock in the last quarter. i can speak for my team we have that hunger and if kadena does as well. then its going to be a very long and wretched nigt!!
re: ima let yall in on a lil secret
44-0, so much for the secret and the bad call from the refs last year at the championship game or it would have been 3 championships in a row, but I guess 2 out of the last 3 is not bad.
Korea League Play was no fluke
I am very happy to see the SAHS team win against Guam, as it only makes Korea football look better than everyone believes... As for SAHS play in league this year, well, 1-4 is 1-4. That being said, most of the games in Korea were decided by 7 points or less, and no one dominated anyone during the season.
Daegu's game against Zama was truly one for the ages (as was game 3 against Osan), and my hat goes off to Daegu for competing as well as they do with an enrollment of only around 180.
As for the Kadena-SAHS game, that is hard to call. Daegu beat Seoul last year, we beat Daegu twice last year to go to FE, and then Seoul ends up beating Kadena in a close one to win the title. You can almost never tell what will happen each year, although I might say that there should be no surprises as in past years, since both teams have seen each other play.
Hope for a game as good as the Class A gunfight.
Korea League Play was no fluke
Maybe it was not but you the Korea League is 0-2 in the championships games this year!!!!
The best overall team/program this season?
This maybe a bit premature, but based on the results thus far my strongest vote for SAHS as the Team of the Quarter !!
* Cross-Country: Won the FE title in a dominating fashion. Thomas Kim and Siarria Ingram #1 finishes.
* Valleyball: In the toughest Gold bracket, they are seeded #1. Coach Denny Hilgar and the girls going for their 1st ever title.
* Football: In the AA Championship final (Wow, I even didn’t see this coming)
* Tennis: SAHS in the 4 out 5 champion finals - girls single (Kennedy Allen), boys double, girls double, mix double.

Congrats Falcons!!!
I just want to say congrats to the Falcons of Seoul American..I too am very proud of you guys.. We now have been to the ship 4 of the 5 years Far East has been around..
Maybe SAHS isnt so bad afterall.... Maybe the Korea league was just the toughest in the pacifc.. anyways with that being said I just want to say good luck Falcons and just know that were here with you...
I also wanna give a shout out to Coach Boyd and the CC team.
Coach Hilgar and the Vball team.
And the tennis team.
What a great day to be a FALCON!
Re: Congrats Falcons!!!
While you are congratulating Seoul on your statement below, Kadena has been to 4 straight Championships game. So what is next, Seoul has won 2 championships, so has Kadena.
Also
Kinnick also split sets with George Washington High School, but won on point differential.
correction
if im not mistaken in 2007 seoul defeated kadena 12-6 in overtime.
That was in 2006 for the
That was in 2006 for the championship
Seoul_Alumni88
Seoul defeated Kadena 12-6 in overtime during the 2006-2007 school year at Seoul.
Kadena defeated Seoul 27-10 at Kadena during the 2007-2008. Kadena then went on to beat Yokota 39-13 in the Championship.
Can't wait until Saturday
This is going to be a great matchup!

joe i told u we was bouta do it to them. we dont give up as long as u dont give up. what chu gon do wen u see dem boys in blue!!
re: a
Win 44-0
broome #55
comments like this spark a fire under the butts of underdogs, everyone knows kadenas the favorite they are a powerhouse but i wouldnt count out the falcons just yet.
you cant predict a championship game like you can predict a regular season game the atmosphere is different and your whole team puts everthing on the line.
ill go ahead and say theres a decent chance for an upset.
and if the falcons do happen to win you heard it first from me.
My prediction: Seoul 45 Kadena 0
Seoul is going to walk over Kadena it will be easy Seoul 45 and Kadena 0 No problem for the Falcons baby!
Seoul vs. Kadena
How many of you have seen a single down of football played during far east? The only Seoul fan I have seen and talked to is Mr. Kelvin Thomas, father of number 7 and 13. So if you haven't seen Kadena play then making such bold statements is absurd. Time will tell all!
Chill
Seoulfalconpride man I dont know who you are but you need to chill...
Congrats on making it to the finals but the job isnt done just yet. I dont mean to burst your bubble but yall got a losing record and I know you guys are happy cuz you finaly won a game but you should never get on a blog and start guarteeing a victory especially a blow out like that.. You guys havent even scored close to 45 points all year so what makes you think youre gonna do it now against Kadena?? I can tell your mind aint right, you need to stay off the blog and get foucsed..
Anyways I still wish you guys the best of luck and i'll be praying for you guys.. Have fun and play hard..
Falcon Pride Son!
hey burns
hey man how ya been? where are you at nowadays? are you playing football or soccer in college?
Broome!
Sorry if I dont remember, but damn man I dont remember who you are lol...
Anyways I've been alright.. All the way in Washington playing soccer.. How about you??
It's all good man, I played
It's all good man, I played for Kadena in 06 and 07. I played DT and LT. I remember ur line was huge and pretty dirty in 07 haha. I am doing good. I was playing football in Iowa last year but came back because I switched my major and the school didn't offer it. Now I am working at one of the schools on Kadena.
seoulfalconpride
hey where u at man!
Kadena 44
Seoul 0
Congrats to Kadena
This yr's Kadena team has to be one of the best. Good job to SAHS.
BTW, who won the 3rd place between Yokota and Guam?
Yokota won
Yokota won
Seoul is going to lose
Kadena is going to kill seoul hands down. Kadena been whoopin on everybody this season and they have home-field advantage. Also seoul has a freshman Qb lil morton. I know dude personally and i know he is talented but he's not going to have a big game. Kadena 34-6.
wut! wut! seoul 35- kadena 0
wut! wut! aint gonna matter what chu gon do wen u see dem boys in blue! seoul 35 kadena 0 kadena aint all that they will be blown out!!
Is it just me or is it that
Is it just me or is it that every time Seoulfalconpride posts, his prediction decreases by 10 points.
Kadena-Seoul Championship
The way they have been dominating everyone, this year’s Kadena has to be one of the best teams ever, if not the BEST in the history Far East.
Having said that….. wouldn’t it be absolutley crazy if SAHS (with first-ever losing season and 3rd place finish in Korea) beat Kadena?
On paper this has to be one of the most lopsided matches, but I’m crossing my fingers for the Falcons to prevail, 24-20.
That's why they play the game...
You're right, Tony. That's why the game is played. On paper somebody always looks dominate, but then what happens? They play the game and at times there are upsets and everyone is surprised at the outcome.
Kadena has been putting up big numbers this year and SAHS has struggled, but SAHS got their footing against a tough Guam team. Could they finally be peaking? We'll see. Will Kadena finally hit the wall and have a let down after flying high all season?
We'll see...that's why they play the game.
Go FALCONS!
Broome
I think I remember you in 07! I played RT and DT myself. Mark Lieberg. #98. And we sure played like a championshp that game. I remember Kadena coach telling Harden that our team was the second best and we could've beat yokota too.
I agree with Burns though (towards Falconpride). Nobody should shout out a victory just yet, especially someone from my home team.
But playing for a Far East Championship can bring out new cards on the table. From adrenaline to pride...this is definantly going to be a tough match.
Some of those boys have the ability to play college ball. That's for sure. I'm still in Korea, but I'm playing on a Korean Company Team wit guys ranging between 25 to 40 years old! Youngest guy in the league and I'm only 18...plus I'm a starter Strong Side Defensive Tackle.
However..
This game is also about miracles. Its about who wants it more. Who craves it more...and more importantly...who BELIEVES in themselves more...

I remember you too man, you were a force in the middle, thats for sure. You were also one hell of a wrestler. What are your plans for next year? I agree that the Championship environment changes everything. That is pretty cool that you are playing for a Korean Company football team man. How does the speed of that league compare to HS football? I played division III ball last year and this year I played in the Japan Interservice league.
This is going to be a great game to watch.
*For everyone who is reading the blogs*, I want you to know that I graduated in 2008. My number was 55 my senior year. Now my brother, Tyler Broome is number 55. I am telling you this so there are no hard feelings or resentment toward my brother.
Thanks,
Michael Broome

Haha, one hell of a wrestler? ehhh. I remember throwing up everyday before practicing in Seoul because I would get really bad gestion problems with my nose. Korea weather =/
I plan on going to Utah State this spring semester. Hopefully drop more weight down so I can pass the tape test for ROTC. However right now, I'm suffering from Shingles...
Speed in the Korean Company Level isn't like high school. But then again..I have never seen BIG korean guys like myself before and was surprised there were guys on our line avging over 230 pounds each!
We played SAHS in a scrimage game though haha. That was pretty fun, but we screwed up alot. Practice makes perfect.
I'll look for you on facebook man.
*As for the championship game*
Can't wait to hear the results from my brother. He's a senior playing Defensive Tackle and Offensive Guard. #52! I got him to quit volleyball and pursue football =)

Seoul American Vs Kadena
Congrats Seoul for beating Guam! Honestly, I didnt really give them a chance against Guam but they showed up to play. Having played for Kadena for 3 years and played against Seoul for 2, this game is going to be a battle. Every year that we played seoul, they come out on all cylinders. Constantly hitting until the whistle blows, blocking properly, and running hard. This game isnt going to be different form the previous 3. Im going with Kadena not because I played for them, but for the simple fact that last years championship game still lingers in the coaches and players mind and that will fuel them emotionally and physically. Close game folks no blowout here.
Kadena 27, Seoul 24
P.S Broome55... Im sure you remember me... remember we were fullbacks in the 07 year???
latham!
of course i remember u chris! how ya been man? what are u doing this year? college ball?
hey!
Im doin great actually. Im in Las Vegas about to go to UNLV and hopefully walk on as a Fullback or Offensive Guard. Any spot on the team would be great, I wouldnt care if I didnt play or was on a practice squad. The atmosphere in a college game would make it all worth it. So I heard your back in Japan. Hows that going for you! And the college ball too!
thats whats up man, keep
thats whats up man, keep working hard and you will make the team bro! I left dubuque because I switched my major, and didnt have enough credits to tranfer as a freshmen. So I opted to come back to Japan and decided to stay this year so I could save up money, earn my associates, and watch tyler's senior year of football and wrestling.
Thats good tho. Kinda what
Thats good tho. Kinda what happened to me. Before Vegas, I was in Florida at a community college and I was going to transfer to Vegas but I didnt have enough credits but I was only at the community college for a semester so its not that bad. I try to read up on Tyler tho. He still looks the same tho.
wow
i played d/o-line for sahs and played you guys twice. anyways, you plan on walking on to unlv? that's really cool man, i'm in vegas myself and plan on transferring to unlv after a couple of years too. good luck with walking on, maybe i can watch you next year.
Woah!!
Oh really??? whats your name and did you play football in vegas? I played for Legacy. Hopefully I will see you at UNLV!!!
I will never forget the
I will never forget the first time we use the meat package!!! you cut jimmy off from getting the ball to ernest but at least u blasted someone on that play haha!
I still look at that play
I still look at that play now and I cant believe that I messed it up!!! I was so excited about being in the backfield that I completely forgot what the play was!!! but yea I did level that guy tho and I remember coach came up to be and had a little something to say to me after that haha!
Man that was the most
Man that was the most memorable game of my life! Our defense was lights out in the second half after giving up 13 points in the 1st half. We held Tony Presnell and Anthony Mcneil to 5 yards on 10 carries between the two of them. I wish after we were up mendoza had handed us the rock in a goal line situation! Jordan Ray definately got the most out of that formation last year.
I know right! At practice we
I know right! At practice we were doin very good and both of us were fast enough to break a 20 yard run easily! But jordan did tho. I know he still kicks himself because of what happened last year in the championship game. I feel bad for him.
Yeah, if only we were given
Yeah, if only we were given the opportunity. I know! I've been told by several people that he was hit below the belt on that play. so be honest chris, how do u think our 07 team would have matched up against some of the schools u played in 08?
2002 Yokota vs. 2007 Kadena
I'd love to have seen a game between 2002 Yokota, at the height of its power, and 2007 Kadena. That would have been an epic battle.
If only! Would you say that
If only! Would you say that this years team is better then 07s?
Re: If only! Would you say that
I'd say they're different. The 2007 team was bigger and more physical. The 2009 team has pure speed, flash and quickness.
