Seven Pacific Leathernecks headed to All-Marine softball tryout camps

Kinda poetic, really, that the MVP of the 2008 Marine Corps Far East Regional Men's Softball Tournament was in his first year of varsity ball.

Daniel Alvarez is one of seven Pacific-based Leathernecks headed to All-Marine softball tryout camps for men and women, scheduled for Aug. 25-Sept. 14 at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C.

Alvarez, 26, a lance corporal from Seattle, helped lead 1st Marine Aircraft Wing to four victories in four games on Thursday, including 16-4 and 10-2 double-elimination championship triumphs over 3rd Marine Division/III Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Foster's Field 1.

Also going to All-Marine camp are six players trying to make their first All-Marine team: Wing teammates Bob Willard and Tim Dawsey, Travis Adams of Division, Luther Gibbs of Marine Corps Base Camp S.D. Butler and Harris Ryerson and Rachael Simons of Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan.

That brings to 29 the total of Pacific-based players headed to their respective All-Service tryout camps.

The All-Armed Forces tournament is scheduled for Sept. 14-19 at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Fla. The All-Armed Forces teams then play in the Amateur Softball Association national Class A tournaments Sept. 25-28 at Oklahoma City.

Congratulations and good luck to all!
