Transfers, younger brothers, budding dynasties and other things
Posted February 15th, 2008 by Dave OrnauerMusings and mutterings from Day 3 of the 2008 DODDS-Pacific Far East High School Wrestling Tournament:
-- Time to call Kadena a dynasty? They've finished second, first, third and first in the last four individual freestyle team title chases. Pantherland has done well, going from five wrestlers in the practice room -- Kubasaki's -- in 1996 to three banners today. With the dual-meet phase of the tournament still to come Saturday.
-- Kadena's 20-point romp over Kubasaki (68-48) was the biggest runaway in 17 years, since Kubasaki ran and hid from St. Mary's International by nearly 30 points.
-- Ten new champions were crowned. Three defending champions repeated, including Kubasaki's Scott Wood, a three-time champion. He has the chance to match Kubasaki's Justin L. Miller (1999) as a four-time champion next February.
-- Nice to see Harry Bloom step out of his brother's shadow in style. The Kadena sophomore won the 141-pound weight class, joining his older brother, three-time champion Jacob (148).
-- Best quote from Friday belongs to Kadena's Chris Hoshaw, who repeated as a Far East champion. "Two-time champion sounds much better." You said it!
-- Two Japan champion transfers, Cameron Butts (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Craig Bell (Kitsap, Wash.), added to their pedigrees at 135 and 122 pounds.
-- Bell, by the way, becomes a rather unusual gold medalist. Wrestles for E.J. King, attends Matthew C. Perry which does not have a program. First gold medalist to represent two schools.
-- Speaking of siblings, Andrew Blankenship of Robert D. Edgren joined his older brother, Matthew, as a 180-pound gold medalist.
-- Though the Trojans only won one gold, Daniel Polaski at 215, Zama American wrestling nation continues to make strides. As a team, Zama took fifth with 37 points -- its highest finish since taking sixth in 2001.
-- Emily Albonetti continues to make history. First girl wrestler to: 1) Wrestle another girl, 2) Win a bout, 3), Win two bouts, 4) Beat a boy, 5) Win by pin, 6) Win a medal, 7) Score points for her team.
-- Is it just me, or is it VERY chilly on Okinawa these days?
Stay tuned. Dual meet championship on Saturday. :)

Can't wait
Wrestling is fun, but when does soccer start!!??!!!!
you said it!

Countdown
Nine days until the first official practice.
Hey Dave?
Hey Dave,
What weight did Andrew's brother wrestle? And I was also wondering, if Zama took fifth this year at Far East, and in 2001 thty finished 6th, then hasn't it been even longer since they have done so good? When was the last time they placed 5th or higher?
Fifth or higher
Last time was in 1990.
