Pacific SportsBlog

Okinawa-based sports reporter Dave Ornauer on military-related sports in the Far East.

Who's your winter season Athlete of the Quarter?

Gad, so many great performances to choose from. So many people did so many wonderful things during this winter sports season.

On March 16, Stripes will honour its Athletes of the Quarter for the winter sports season.

Requests for nominations from coaches, athletics directors and school administrators were sent out Tuesday.

But Ornauer wants to know what SportsBlog Nation thinks.

Sound off! Who deserves the honour above and beyond anybody else? And why?

It doesn't have to be somebody at your school; it can be anybody of your choosing, based on the same criteria I use for final selections:

-- Outstanding achievement on the court/field.
-- Outstanding performance in the classroom.
-- Outstanding citizenship in the community.

Let's hear what you think. :)

The "Freshmen"

I'd like to recognize/commend 2 outstanding freshmen from Yokota High School.

Male category: Derick Seward -- outstanding freshman with a positive attitude both on and off the field/court and soon to be track. A real team player who doesn't quit...no matter what. A down-to-earth athlete, he never likes to portray himself as better than anyone else, and is always looking to better himself in anything that he does. He is a "sleeping giant" and reliable in the clutch. I look for big things for him in the years to come.

Female category: Charae Caldwell -- another outstanding freshman with a positive attitude on and off the court. She really stepped it up this year on the court!

I won't go into long drawn out reasons for my 2 suggestions, but those who know these individuals won't disagree that they are not worthy of your consideration.

i think to get athlete of

i think to get athlete of the quarter you need alot more than a good attitude...

Possibly

They are both good athletes, and definetly have what it takes to become future athletes of the quarter, mvps, etc., but as freshmen they're not the ones you think of when u put up names like barney, brown, spencer, etc.

Athlete of the quarter...

Willie Brown, Seoul American High School. Willie was the MVP of the Hong Kong basketball tournament in November and MVP of the Far East basketball tournament in February.

Athelete of the Quarter

I agree sports_fanatic, just because they are good for their grade level doesn't mean they are the best nominees for Athlete of the Quarter. Especially individuals like D.Steward whose team didn't even do outstanding at any point in the season. What did Yokota win in basketball? 60 percent of their games? But like Tony said maybe in the future when he is or if he ever even does become an exceptional athlete than maybe his chances would be better. However, I have a few Yokota wrestlers in mind who I could see being selected. In my opinion only someone who dominates their competition or maybe makes an "epic" comeback at Far East and dominates there should be considered for this honor. I would recommend giving this to an undefeated wrestler or one who came close to it. No basketball team went undefeated this season or even came close. Maybe one of the thirteen Far East Wrestling Champions. Plus it's a whole lot easier to name a wrestler outstanding since its an individual sport. In wrestling you can't have a bad day and expect other teammates to compensate for your flaws like in basketball. Here are my nominees (not in any specific order) for Baseketball and Wrestling.

Boys Basketball: Jamil Barney(Kadena) or Willie Brown(Seoul)

Wrestling: Daniel Polaski(Zama), Cameron Butts(Kinnick), Kevin Radford(Edgren), Tony Pressnel(Yokota), or Andrew Blankenship(Edgren).

I don’t know too much about female athletics.

outside mainland

You can't forget wrestlers such as Scott Wood and Jake Bloom on Okinawa. The two dominated their weight classes and each picked up their third Far East gold medal.

Winter Athlete of the Quarter

I would like to nominate Cameron Butts for showing oustanding performance throughout the season and especially at Far East. He was the oustanding wrestler at both Kanto Finals and Far East.

Tony Presnell and Mark Meade from Yokota both have come a long ways to be where they are now. I feel that they deserve some recognition. I have been watching them wrestle since they were freshmen's and they have made a tremendous amount of improvement. Congratulations to both wrestlers for their title.

Wrestling athletes

More then one of the thirteen Fareast Wrestling Champions went undefeated in THEIR weight classes,
115 Scott Wood ( 3 fareast championships),
122 Craig Bell (Undefeated),
135 Cameron Butts (other than 2 loses to 141s 2nd place finisher),
141 Harry Bloom (a loss to 148 champion/big brother),
148 Jake Bloom ( 3-time champ and undefeated),
158 Tony Presnell (Undefeated),
168 Kevin Radford (Undefeated),
215 Daniel Polaski (Undefeated at 215, loss at 180 in Misawa)

Craig Bell

Craig Bell lost in Korea I believe

craig bell is a very

craig bell is a very technical, solid wrestler. his technique is there, speed, strength, dedication...it's all there

Obvious Choice…

Edgren’s Kevin Radford should be selected as the STARS & STRIPES Athlete of the Quarter!

In first recognizing that everyone mentioned is more than worthy of the nomination … Kevin dominated his weight class.

FAR EAST 2007 (as a freshman), he placed 3rd INDIVIDUAL and contributed to Edgren obtaining an unprecedented 4th place team finish with a victory over Polaski.
FAR EAST 2008 (the ONLY sophomore to truly go UNDEFEATED); he won the GOLD and lead Edgren to a school record 3rd place team finish.
All this immediately following his role as the starting linebacker of CLASS A’s most ferocious defense, as Edgren obtained their second consecutive FAR EAST Class A Championship.

That’s what you can call a TREMENDOUS improvement.

Now, let’s not lose sight that the Athlete of the Quarter selected should also be an excellent STUDENT/in addition to being a phenomenal ATHLETE. Kevin has maintained a 3.7 GPA.

This award should be given to an athlete who reflects what every school would want as their model STUDENT/ATHLETE. Kevin is well known, respected and admired by his peers, coaches & teachers.

Last year, Kevin WAS that FRESHMAN with a good attitude and the potential to be a future AOTQ … this year Kevin IS!

Polaski

Polaski lost to Bob Scott and Andrew Blankenship when he wrestled 180 at Misawa.

dadf

dadf

?

I don't know what that means JJ.

Why not Burns

Daniel Burns from Seoul American would be a good candidate.
He's a three-sport player and the captain for all football, basketball, and soccer. He possess great leadership qualities on and off the field otherwise he wouldnt be the captain.

In basketball this year, was the starting point guard and made all tournament in Yokota at the news years classic and all-tournament in the far east tournament. Hes not your Willie Brown, but he gives it his all at all times and watch out for him on the soccer pitch this spring.

WhY not BURNS???!!!???

Look at the last statement you just said!
If you could successfully name another player off of the top of your head who is obviously better and more qualified for the spot then you have obviously answered your own question!!!
To put out a patition of this sort, First you must convince yourself!

Daniel Polaski. Jamil

Daniel Polaski.

Jamil Barney

True Kevin is a great nominee

Kevin Radford is a great candidate, i don't know how his performance last year is relevant to be selected as THIS athlete of the quarter but either way he deserves to be recognized :)...

Rico

No one has mentioned any of the EJ King players. I think you need to look at Fernando Rico. He led that team to a second place finish this year. He has started on the that team for 4 years and been a captain for 3 years. Anyone who knows that team will tell you that he is the rock the kept them together, and as he goes they go. They are a totally different team when he is not around. He has been All Far East Basketball twice and Tennis this past year. He is also the Student Council President and an Honor Roll student. Everything you are looking for in an Athlete of the Quarter.

Winter Season Athlete

This year Edgren has been put on the map. Taking Class A Football by strorm as back-to-back champions and their wrestling team is still climbing to be one of the Pacific's best. As for the Winter Season Athlete of the Quarter, you have to really look at Andrew Blankenship. The stud FB on Edgren's (Fantastic Four) Football Team. Also, being the only Senior on Edgren's Wrestling Team, winning the 180lb Far East Title and leading them to their best finish in school history.

Nominees

It's pretty clear that everyone has legitimate candidates for the Athlete of the quarter. (Interestingly, almost the whole argument has been for the male athlete). Everyone has submitted great candidates, and there are many more out there who are deserving. I know there are a few from my school who I feel have earned the nomination. One of the best parts of naming one athlete is that we can all say "Good choice, but what about XYZ". This blog is a great place for us to sing the praises of the kids we feel are deserving, and undoubtedly some will not agree with the choice but that's life. Thanks for the forum Dave.

winter, not fall

Not to be rude, but i thought this was the Winter season athlete of the quarter, Misawa football has nothing to do with it, Yokota is a smaller school then Edgren and Yokota won both of the football games.

Athlete

As I recall, Yokota was in the Class AA not Class A with Edgren, so let's get that straight. Concerning my input to who should be Winter Athlete of the Quarter, my choice is the same. I was stating all the leadership qualities of Andrew (at Edgren). Even if football doesn't belong as input, he should still be a strong candidate.

Straight as an arrow

You are correct Remote, Yokota does play in the larger football division, by choice. Our school has 310 (+/- a few) kids, which means we fall under the small school category for football. That's keeping it straight!

Yokota

Yokota was still a smaller school then Edgren, we chose to play Class AA football, our enrollment is something like 300 kids? Just because we're in a different league doesn't mean we cant be smaller.

yall still bigger than edgren

i understand that yokota has like 300 students but thats still bigger than edgren. What makes you think that Edgren is bigger? The school only has 280 or so students 7-12. i absolutely hate when people throw the size factor in therre. we all know that the sizes are always a conflict but lets get rid of that excuse...its getting a lil tired

Of Course Size Matters

I was simply making you aware of the fact that although Yokota participated in the AA Far East Football Tournament, we could have been in the class A tourney. If that had happened, Edgren would never have had the opportunity to compete or win the tournament the past 2 years. Yokota beat Edgren every time and would have won the bid to compete.
When did I say Yokota was smaller than Edgren? 30-40 students difference is miniscule when it comes to competitive nature of schools.

no need to get angry

was simply going on what i was told from others, but i do know we could play small school football , but thats off topic anyways

Haha, so anyways

Ah, I'm pretty sure that Edgren has about 330 students 9-12 not 7-12...if that were true their graduating class would be as small as iwakuni... so them having 280 7-12 is balony...anyways, I have narrowed down my nominations for athlete of the quarter to one...Tony Pressnel, a junior from Yokota(I am not from Yokota either so this is who I feel truly deserves this) who won Far East at 158 pounds and went undefeated. Tony had the nicest versitle wrestling style I saw all season. He could do anything from high aplitude double legs to russian roles and amazing upper body throws. Tony didn't have an easy season either, his competition was, I believe, the toughest in the Far East... He went 3 rounds on several occations with his opponents but always managed to finish getting his hand raised. Some of the wrestlers he beat throughout the season included: Radford, Johnson, Cash, the Guam wrestler who was undefeated until he faced Tony, and Nurial-Decalio. Tony has all the qualities being looked for in the Athlete of the Quarter... He led Yokota t o a Kanto first and 3rd place finish at Far East. I could very easily go into detail about his outstanding football season as linebacker and running back who's stats far overpass both previous nominees Radford and Blankenship, but I won't because this is ATHLETE OF THE QUARTER for the winter season, not fall.

In my opinion Tony is the most deserving athlete and should without a doubt be selected...

FACTS People Please!!!

Please allow me to point out one additional CORRECTION, since many of you still continue to speak from emotions without considering the FACTS!

Tony Presnell has NEVER wrestled KEVIN Radford, thus has NEVER defeated Kevin. Presnell has had success over KENNETH Radford, thus earning respect as A deserving athlete for consideration of AOTQ. Tony being the only road block preventing the RADFORD brothers and Edgren from dominating the 158/168/180 weight class.

Kevin, as previously mentioned, is UNDEFEATED! This includes victories over Guam's - Nabors (Sr), Yokota's - Conklin (Jr), Kubasaki's - Haynes (Jr), & Kadena's - Carpenter (Sr); not to mention the 2-time Asia-Pacific Invitational Tournament Champion - John Prager (Sr). With the excellent skills these wrestlers possess, either of them could have won the GOLD - had it not been for Edgren's SOPHOMORE! I believe 168 compared with 158 for their level of difficulty, taking nothing away from 158. The wrestlers mentioned above contributed greatly to the success of their programs.

But, with many of the winners accomplishing the feat of winning a FAR EAST CHAMPIONSHIP for the first time as a Junior or Senior, I don't truly feel everyone understand the caliber of skill and ability for a SOPHOMORE to dominate. I congratulate Harry Bloom for winning his weight class as a SOPHOMORE!

So, does SIZE matter? In some things (use your imagination) ... unfortunately, in discussing the Stars & Stripes ATHLETE of the Quarter - it can be only one male or one female. The MOST deserving choice is Kevin Radford.

SELECT!

Ornauer ... bet you didn't think this topic would be as hot, huh?

Hot topic

Well, this is probably as heated a debate as I've seen on this topic since SportsBlog Nation opened for business last spring.

Everybody is going to have their favourite. As much as you bleed Edgren green and gold, somebody else might foist Falcons Navy blue and white or Oceanview Columbia Blue and Scarlet Red (I kid you not; those were that school's oh-ficial colours).

And no matter who Ornauer ends up choosing ... there'll be a large segment of folks who don't agree, but let's face it -- that's part of the fun and challenge of selecting ONE boy and ONE girl as Athlete of the Quarter.

And no matter who Ornauer ends up choosing ... nothing at the end of the day but love for EVERY athlete who endeavours on the field or court, not just those two. :)

Wrestling

Well, since there was no 129 pound included to this list.
How about Matthew Maza from Kubasaki Dragons.Whom was part of that group whom took both Individual / Team Championship in 2005.
He went undeafeated last season and also brought home another gold medal at Far East.
He claimed two Far East Gold and 1 silver. And numerous island meets to his belt.
He is a quite and well manner wrestler and does not blow his horn.
And yes, he was the only wrestler that denied Jake Bloom his 4th crown back in 2005.Both men are best of friends outside the mat.BUT, come wrestling time .Warriors they are. These two and all who wrestle on Okinawa have a bond only these wrestlers understand. They are family then and will always cherish their glory and lost being a wrestler from the island of Okinawa. Which these fine young men will call home.

Hey Maza

Hey Maza, you do know that your username shows on your comment right? Are you talking about yourself in third-person? haha...and what's "Okinawan brotherhood bonds" and bloom being bestfriends with you have to do with anything? BTW i remind you that matt didn't wrestle this year, that was last year so i'm not for certain but that would probably disqualify him for getting this award for the 2007-08 Winter sports season..haha

Maza

Matt was definetly one of the top three wrestlers in the 2006-2007 Far East tournament, if not the best. And sorry if you felt i was excluding him, but i was only mentioning the 2007-2008 season guys

Maza

Matt was definetly one of the top three wrestlers in the 2006-2007 Far East tournament, if not the best. And sorry if you felt i was excluding him, but i was only mentioning the 2007-2008 season guys

you are so wrong

knowitall

the graduating class of edgren High is less than 65 buddy.. as a matter of fact i must apologize for saying that we only had about 280 sumthin students, we actually have 295, which is still a very small amount......

You're right

You're right that 295 is a rather small amount, but it's only 16 students less than Yokota has.

What are you talking about?!!?

This is for this year...Matt Maza didn't even wrestle, he GRADUATED..haha, take and second to think about what you are talking about

wait were you trying to say

wait were you trying to say John Prager was a two time pacific champ?

Prager

Two-time Asia-Pacific Invitational Tournament champion.

Question

I'm still kinda new here i guess... lol... What tournament is that, just one of the regular in-season tournaments, or out of the kanto/fareast league?

I love this site!

There are basically 3 groups of people who post on this site:
A: Coaches, officials, and others who are relatively unbiased and like to talk about what's going on in the Pacific.
B: Student Athletes who often add nice perspectives
C: Proud mommies and daddies who think their child is the greatest ever and get very upset when anything to the contrary is written or when they're left out.
Sorry da Kang, but I have to call you out for a minute...
You asked for facts but went a little postal in your last post and criticized others for speaking only with emotion. Take a look at your posts my friend you are all emotion, thanks for the chuckle. To go all CAPS CRAZY about someone mixing up the Radford brothers is a little excess. They are in adjacent weight classes, and look very similar, and their names are similar. It is easy to mix them up unless you know them both very well. Second, you are correct that Kevin Radford is a very solid wrestler (both brothers are) but you get a little far fletched with your argument. First of all the wrestlers that you mention who Mr. Radford had to beat may be solid, but not standouts by any stretch of the imagination. Also, if you look at some Far East history, 168 is typically one of the weaker weight classes (no offense to all who wrestle in it, but it's true). Bringing up the argument that Prager is a 2x APAC champ is kind of sad. Everyone who attends the tournament knows it's pretty much a joke and the only reason it was used is because the Int'l Schools wanted to give their kids a trip to fill the void of Far East (as soon as Rumble was initiated, they dropped the Guam tourney). However Prager is a solid wrestler. Presnell wasn't the only roadblock to 158-180 dominance, Cody Cash of Kadena beat Radford pretty handidly.
158, in many people's opinion was by far the toughest weight class. Cash was an Okinawa Prefecture champ and bronze medalist in the Junior Olympics (so I was told), Hernandez of Guam was very good (much better than Neighbors) not to mention Presnell and Radford.
Being a sophomore should have nothing to do with winning the accolades, otherwise what about everyone who ever won a FE wrestling title as a freshman?
I like the objectivity of most blogs, but when the passion of a parent/girlfriend/coach is in a blog, it always give me a great laugh.

Water Cooler Chat...

GhostWriter,

(I'll minimize my use of CAPS, but remember - DON'T HATE my computer skills, we are in the ZONE) {lol}

Now, mind you - I didn't intend to take anything away from the competitiveness of 158. My other SOPHOMORE (ooops - forgot about you hatin' on that CAPS thang) Kenneth Radford, who has been only wrestling for a little over 2 years, found much success within 158. Yes, Cody Cash (Senior) did beat Kenneth in 3 rounds in the Individual; yet, did you see Kenneth man-handle Mr. Cash (7-4, 6-0) in the dual meet? Did you mention that he was an Okinawa Prefecture champ and bronze medalist in the Junior Olympics (so you were told)? Please verify, if possible, I would like to add that to Kenneth's resume! {lol}

If the PACAF (is that accepted?) had any freshmen that would have won Far East - then, I would be on their band wagon, as well. That's an accomplishment that rivals how everyone cheered when one of the females at Far East did well. It wasn't that everyone didn't believe that they could do it ... it was just exciting to see, due to the obstacles they had to overcome. If my memory serves me correct, didn't the young lady from Korea, who placed at Far East, win AOTW?

I, too, enjoy this blog - as it gives everyone an opportunity to sit around the water cooler and share their own "expertise". Be it office politics or sports - everyone becomes a sports writer (no offense Dave) with their own perspective. Hopefully, everyone finds enjoyment and don't take anything too personal; hence, the reason for the "No-Hate" disclaimer. So, believe me, I'm laughing as I read others comments, as well as laughing more as I type mine. Ghostwriter, thanks for the "SHOUT-OUT!"

You can also add to your

You can also add to your children's resume's (I'm assuming this is mom or dad, especially by the comment about your other sophomore) that they are respected and admired by every coach in the Pacific. Great wrestlers, great competitors, and great attitudes.
Yes, the girl from Osan got all kinds of accolades for winning a match and blah blah blah blah. Sorry, but my opinion about that whole issue is that if a girl wants to wrestle, fine and good luck to her. But don't make a big spectacle out of it. I too hope that people don't take this too personal, but unfortunately some do. It's a great site for us to sit around and talk about Pacific sports.
Oh, and good job on keeping the caps to a minimum :p have a good week Kang.

Spectator and Dad

Both the Bradford boys, Butts (Kinnick), Woody (Zama), Chis (Yokota) and the lone wrestler from southern Japan all have great parents! It takes great parents to raise kids with actual respect for everyone they come in contact with, to include spectators, fellow competitors and pesky sports writers with nice camera's! :)

More than that

I would say that the majority of the wrestlers are good kids and show respect. Unless you have wrestled, you don't understand how frustrating and at times humiliating it can be to be in the middle of the mat and lose. Everyone is watching and it's very humbling. I feel very proud and lucky for each kid that is on my team, no matter what their win-loss record was.

Kenneth better then Cash? hmmpff

Did you put into factor that Cash only weighed 150lbs? Yes, as you might not have known he wrestled UP the whole season. So he was at a bit of a disadvantage in the duels. Other wrestlers who cut to 158 were able to shoot back up to 160's or above I’m sure. When you have to wrestle someone who has a good 10 lbs on you it can really have a big effect.

And even if Kenneth did manage to get the best of Cody in the duels, Mr. Cash beat him where it counted and earned himself a well disserved silver medal. So no matter what you say, or how you put it, Cash got a silver and Kenneth got a bronze.

I mean no offence what so ever to Kenneth, he is a solid wrestler, but I don’t believe he is better than Cash.

Weak Points

Okay Stropesblog, I am not sure that your arguments hold much water. If Radford beat Cash in the duals, than that takes away from the argument that he is so much better. I am sure that if Cash had beaten Presnell in the duals you would be saying he should be the "true champ."
The argument about weight is pretty slim too. 10lbs isn't that much at these weights. Heck, at HWT you have as much as a 60lb differential. It's a much bigger deal in the first few weight classes. After watching the 158s wrestle, I would say that not too many had "sucked down" to that weight. Also, lots of kids have to bump up a weight class.
Cash is a solid wrestler, and deserved his silver medal.

TP

All great comments,

I was at the tournament and the 158lb class was the most competetive. Most of the other brackets had two good wrestlers. With the kid from Guam, Radford, Cash and Presnell this group had the most (sheer numbers) tallented wrestlers. Presnell beat all of them, so he gets my vote if I only get one. I will say when the Kadena wrestlers lost, they were not all "good sports". Mr. Cash wouldn't even shake Mr. Presnell's hand. So he gets no vote here. The other two would get my vote if I had more than one. Here's one for you, what about the girl who won a far east wrestling match?

The Girl

Just because a girl won a wrestling match does not mean that she should be recognized, especially if she loses to an inexperienced little fella who doesn't know much about wrestling. Also, I am sure that if you put the same talent that the girl had into a boy's body, she would have probalby lost that match. That sounds weird, but let me explain:
Many times boys don't want to wrestle girls because of the awkwardness of the whole thing. My 101 and 108 easily beat all females they wrestled this year, but said they were some of their most diffucult matches because #1 they don't want to hurt her, and #2 it is just weird. I have to remind them that she is out there to beat them.
She went out and wrestled, good for her. But let's not forget that wrestling coaches take just about anyone who comes into the room. I'll give a girl props as soon they beat a legitimate wrestler!
