Stuttgart H S freshman Dylan Measells pitches two No hitters
Stuttgart's Patch High school baseball team freshman Dylan Measells, faced the minimum number of batters, 15 in a no hit 11-0 win over Hoenfels HS team. In the European Championships Dylan pitched 4 innings of no hit ball in a 6-0 win over Kaiserslautern.
Mark Lieberg
Mark holds the record for the Shotput event at Mike Petty Invitational in Okinawa since 2008.
Athlete of the Quarter
Throwing a shotput is deffinetly not a respectable enough talent to be athlete of the quarter.
you should try throwing
you should try throwing then. just once and tell me how it isn't.
Shotput
To master the shotput (much less, with the very advanced "spin technique") can take years. The discus can be just as difficult. For Mark to dominate like he did the past couple years is extremely impressive. He's also a very good kid. There was a reason kids came from all over the track to watch him throw the shot.
I'd say that's pretty respectable.
shotput
im gonna sway more to polaski's side on this one
i wouldnt consider this a matter of respectability because the technique is rather complex but i would say that since this is for the title "athlete" of the quarter and not "strongman" of the quarter, there would definantly have to be an accompaniment by another event for this guy to be a legit contender for THIS particular title
Athlete of the Year
Donavan, I'm so proud of you and I'm sending my nomination all the way from Detroit Michigan. You're a winner in my eyes already. I love you and e-mail when you win. your Uncle Terrance says, keep leaving em in the wind!!! Lil T and Terrell said good job!!!
Character always translates into winning.
I have known Donovan Brown since he was 2 years old. This is a very special young man, and it was not hard to see these qualities in him even at a younger age. If there is one word to sum up Donavan, the word would be consistent. Through the examples set by an incredible family, Donavan has time and time again shown that expectations are not just something he meets, but more than often exceeds. Donavan through your accomplishments that you have acheived thus far, you are already, and have always been a winner in my book. I'm very proud of you.

wheres john beckius!?
and ernst dencher!!??
All bias aside, Peral and
All bias aside, Peral and Chae should NOT be up there. In KAIAC, neither of them showed up when it mattered most i.e. final league game home to SFS (lost 2-0, SFS wins league), and the KAIAC final where they lost 2-1 to SFS. The only person from YISS that should be on this list is the tall German defender.
the german defender
i think the guy was hungarian, last i heard. lengyel's his last name.

Cool
Andrew park is a cooperative player and the best player on SFS
Honestly
Andrew Park deserves it. He tore it up this season. He is a very well rounded player and i wont be surprised to see him as captain next year.
woah...
andrew did very well. he has a keen ability to make players around him better
Sorry YISSers.. Andrew Park
Sorry YISSers..
Andrew Park
Athlete of the Quarter
David Kim, Yongsan International-Seoul: 24 goals, 18 assists, best offensive player (KAIAC-2009), third Far East Title with Guardians.
Park
Andrew's high assist record shows he's a cooperative player who's willing to distribute the ball as well as take it to the goal. He's also shown athleticism on the basketball court earlier this year. Definitely an athlete to be recognized.
the previous year, andrew
the previous year, andrew had 22 assists, this shows how he can play any role given to him. great athlete.
It's about Far East, too, not just KAIAC
YIS-Seoul's star may have dimmed during KAIAC, but after a fluke loss to GVCS, the Guardians ran the table and looked like their old selves in capturing back-to-back Far East Class A Tournament titles. It was there that Chae, Peral and the others stood out. It's not just about KAIAC; Far East is, now and forever, the big show.
Yiss isnt even in the main
Yiss isnt even in the main far east!!
SFS is part of APAC the bigger stage and have dominated the past few years. also, hate to break it to you bud, but take a look at the head to head clashes between sfs and yiss. sfs has won every single time except for 1 tie early in this years season. yiss never shows up against sfs in the games that count the most.
Far East v KAIAC
hate to burst your bubble there friend, but /YISS didn't even go to the main Far East championship
anyone can stand out against mediocre teams, real leaders stand out in the big games (which in KAIAC is the games against SFS, which is where they were absent)
Class A vs. Class AA
Um ... since when is Class A considered minor league compared to Class AA?
Since Class A
Runner up misawa got worked in the regular season by every kanto team they played. With maybe the exception of one game where massie carried the team with 3 goals. Class A runner up seems to be a lot less competition these days dave.
misawa... A vs AA
the edgren girls came in 5th but played stronger than they did all season... i think it would be the same with the boys... it has to do with the climate up there ... they have to start late and they end up as late bloomers
the girls class A runner up ( MC Perry) did well against the Kanto teams... beating Kinnick 3 times, Yokota once or twice and a tie vs Zama ... yet they lost 4-0 and 4-1 in the finals vs Osan
(and Osan and Daegu combined for 3-0-1 against SAHS in the season)
YISS
Edgren played 2 Japan teams (MCP and EJK) and Osan ( 6th place in KAIAC) in close games to get to the finals vs YISS - a game Edgren lost 8-0 ... this is your argument that YISS wasnt all that good ?
Too bad SFS was at APAC ... that would have made the AA boys more competitive for sure
These days?
to the crusaders
the crusaders have been around for around 100 years while the guardians have only been around for about 25. crusaders have been involved with soccer activities and such ever since DoDDs schools stationed themselves in korea. the guardians started their soccer program just 8 years ago. and that was back in division ii.
it's only obvious that the crusaders should have won this season, and they should for the rest of this decade with such a history and so much support from their staff. the guardians only had one coach that led them to far east and for most of the season. you guys have experience, and you've played with the likes of remco rademaker, and you know what real finishing is.
so what's the big deal? who cares if you beat the guardians - you SHOULD have beaten them! it would have been a major shame for you guys not to have won, and it's even surprising that they tied with you guys.
it's so funny watching you guys make such a commotion. this was after far east, remember that, gents. this ain't about you.
so calm down. dave shines the spotlight on the DoDDs school teams, not you guys. go create your own website if you want them talking about you all day.
but i do agree with james_park. john beckius made amazing saves, and if it weren't for him, then you guys would have lost several times. ernst dencher also deserves to be up here, but i guess not.
but andrew park? i don't think he made any real contribution to the win against the guardians in the kaiac finals. you guys were sluggish that day, and you're lucky that you won that penalty kick. ernst finished it real nicely.
with your whole starting defense gone next year, and with only andrew park to lean on for real experience, i think you guys will have a tough time winning the conference. but your greatest weapon: you guys are the crusaders. that carries a name for itself.
just use it wisely.
Not exactly just DODDS
While our readership is primarily DODDS, SportsBlog Nation is open to all. Else, why would I list international-school athletes as possible AOQ nominees? *smile*
Good thing we started Spring Football Practices this week
Gotta love the soccer drama... I think the points were made well by Dave above... Osan girls took second in Korea, and then went on to win FE, against an MCP team that beat most of the large schools in their league. Yes there are teams that standout, but overall, there is parity.. Remember that some of these teams play together year round, so they shold be playing at a higher level.
Now, back to football (American football that is)
Was good to get the lads out on the pitch the last couple of days, and am looking forward to the camp in August...
Remember that Football and basketball are probably the two major team sports that are affected the most by school size, as there are only so many lads of good size available at the smaller schools... odds tend to be against you. With that in mind, the Class A vs Class AA argument: Daegu beat Seoul last year in Football (almost twice), and then Seoul went on to win the AA Championship. Seoul has only lost three games in the last 3 years, and two of them were against Osan and Daegu..
Bottom line is that we look forward to playing Seoul every year, and we play them to win. We do not go into a game hoping for the best as a Class A school against a AA school, and I know they look forward to playing us, as it helps prepare them for the AA FE playoff.
As a coach at Osan, winning FE is important, but we also look at winning the KAIAC Football League championship as another goal.
Ciao... and smile
looking at your articles...
Dave,
I'm not saying you guys don't talk about other international school at all. it's just we all know where your primary focus is on even when most of us feel it shouldn't be there. You quote DoDDs schools' coaches for games between two international schools. if the winner of the FE happened to be someone not DoDDs, you would focus the article on the army based schools.
I'm not trash talking you or anything, i'm just pointing out facts here. This is the whole reason for the crusaders making such a big racket about how andrew park should be nominated and etc.
By the way, you should come to Korea some time and watch the KAIAC games to witness the intensity yourself. I'm pretty sure watching the Crusaders and the Guardians play against each other will having you writing all week about it. It happened to me.
look at the readership ...
whenindoubt:
Just FYI: The Stars and Stripes happens to be a newspaper whose readership happen to be mostly people who would like to know how the DoDDS schools are doing. I don't think Dave is intentionally trying to snub international schools, he's got to do what it takes to keep the paper going - sell papers that are interesting to the readership.
I would think that only a few of the readership are concerned with an international school that won the championship. They want to read how their son on the second-place team played his heart out and just didn't win the big prize.
I used to wonder all about that before, because I coached teams from Guam whose teams won many volleyball Far East tournaments only to see the biggest writeup be about a DoDDS team that finished fourth. I get it now though.
It's all about the readership. Which is important, not Dave's fault. He's got a job to keep.
~Hard work just can't be beaten~
totally aware, just sending out a message
sportsview:
oh, no, no no. i am fully aware of the fact that this is Dave's job- tell write of the DoDDs schools' performance in sports and such, and this is not a problem for me.
I've only mentioned this because the Seoul Foreign School Crusaders (as you can read in the earlier posts on this page) were having a fit about how most of their "star" players were not mentioned at all as nominees to the athlete of the quarter.
speaking of which, i voted Arnold Chae.he led the guardians at iwakuni to their 3rd first place title in four years. watched them, and arnold just completely dominated the defense.
Dave, i really don't think that team should stay in the class a competition. it's not going to be good for them. they'll start thinking that it's a vacation, and it will screw with their whole soccer career.
I'm telling you, you have to give these guys a chanced at class AA. on paper, you write that CAJ is 1st place at the moment and the Guardians were right behind them for most of the season. advocate this team and talk to the board about getting an exception to their rules.
unless you want to have guardians stuck at class A winning the title every time they take a shot at it. i personally don't feel like it's fair for them that they can't move up. i would love to see them come face to face with the likes of this Leo of CAJ, Yokota, etc.
that's just my opinion of course, I'm just a spectator, i have no power in that.
Lots to choose from, but only ONE true athlete of the QUARTER
DONAVAN BROWN ... KANTO INVITATIONALS ... 3 GOLD MEDALS (400m hurdles, 400m run, 200m sprint) and 1 BRONZE (100m sprint). He scored 36 points on his own (more than 6 TEAMS that participated in the Invitationals). Single handedly pushed Kinnick to a second place finish.
UNDEFEATED the entire season at the 400m hurdles and broke the KANTO LEAGUE record.
Student Council President ... winner of the Phi Delta Kappa Scholarship and an outstanding young man.
Any other questions?
~Hard work just can't be beaten~
Donavan Brown +1
Not only for his amazing performance at the Kanto Invite (50.75 electronic time in the 400 having no practice is nuts!), but Donavan is a great kid and willing to do whatever it takes to make the team succeed.
The kid was only limited to 36 points because there was a limit on the amount of events he could compete in.
Donavan Brown...
Another Kinnick Athlete with remarkable stats and a remarkable personality. He is one of the most well rounded young men have seen. Good luck in this quest; he deserves it for his performance on and off the track.
Eddie for Athlete of the Quarter!!!
Eddie Davis is an outstanding and respectful young man off the mound as well as on the mound.
He uses his blessed mixed ethnic ability to help others with Japanese translations. His friends know that he will always answer his phone and is willing to help with anything from translating directions to helping with Japanese homework. An excellent example of the "Kinnick Red Devil Spirit".
Go Eddie!!
Eddie Davis AOQ...
Can you throw a shot consistantly at 80 mph? I witness Eddie Davis pitching at the Kanto Tournament in Astugi against Seoul American. Amazing comand of his pitches and a devistating off speed pitch. When Eddie's coach met him on the base path towards the end of the game, I heard him tell his coach, "I got this." I would imagine Eddie is that type of person all around.
Seoul has a lot of talent on there team and to have Eddie throw a one hitter against them says a lot. I also read in this very well known newspaper called "The Stars and Stripes" that Eddie Davis threw a 2 hitter against Kubasaki in the consolation round.
Curious to know how many hits, walks, strikeouts he had during the season. Dave?
I've searched my friend's
I've searched my friend's name online and came up with this article. What a coincidence to have a friend named Eddie Davis as well. This guy you're all talking about seems to be quite a wonderful human being. I wish I could say the same about my friend. But who knows, perhaps one day he will live up to this name as well...
EDDIE
HES THE BEST PITCHERS NO ONE CANT MISS WITH IN KANTO!
How about Leo? 4-time
How about Leo? 4-time All-Star, 2-time Class AA MVP, leads team to Far East championship this year... how many times have those feats. been accomplished?
I agree
I saw him play as a freshmen vs. Yokota and the kid was an beast. I can only imagine him 4 yrs later, he also won golden boot as a freshmen
did he do all of that in one quarter?
Sorry, for being sarcastic, but I think people are losing focus here. This is the discussion for Athlete of the QUARTER. I believe Leo has a shot for Athlete of the Year with all those stats, but last year and the other years before don't qualify him for this year's athlete of the quarter.
His accomplishments this quarter are great too, which is why he's on the list, but that's all that should be considered, don't you think?
Otherwise, everybody's history will be dug up and it will be a complete mess. :-)
~Hard work just can't be beaten~

Eddy Davis
I was able to catch for Eddy this season, and it was great. I could trust him to keep it out of the dirt when there was a man on-base or two strikes. He has an amazing curveball, and he can always get out of a jam.
