Words and music

Elisabeth Ridderhoff is an Army wife and a mother of three, as well as a singer and songwriter. For this week’s Spouse Calls, I talked with Elisabeth about “Soldier Girl,” a song she wrote for the family of PFC Amy Duerksen, who died in Iraq.

List of links for counseling help

Lately in Spouse Calls, PTSD and resources for families affected by it have been frequent topics. The March 23 Spouse Calls was about resources for military families in need of counseling for any issues.

For this post, I wanted to place links for all the counseling information and resources I've recently covered in one convenient place. Just click on the blue letters to use the links:

If you didn't see the Scene magazine in the Mar. 16 Stars and Stripes, you missed a two-page spread about books that speak to the lives of military spouses and their families. But you can still access them right here:

Another Source of help

Several recent Spouse Calls columns have been about counseling resources for military families. This week's edition is about another resource, a Bible study written especially for military wives, called "Loving Your Military Man." (Click here to read the March 16 column.)

The most effective tools for military spouses are created by military spouses, and this is no exception. Author Bea Fishback was an Army wife for 20 years and now serves in England with her husband, Jim in the Military Ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ.

Care from the civilian world

A group of mental health professionals in the Boston area founded the Strategic Outreach For All Reservists, which offers free and confidential counseling to military families.
“Our hope from the beginning has been to provide a national program,” said Dr. Kenneth Reich, co-director of SOFAR. “Families are just beginning to get the focus in the press and the attention that they deserve.”
Dr. Reich and co-director Dr. Jaine Darwin have active plans for SOFAR expansion in Pennsylvania, Texas and New York. A program in Michigan is set to begin in April.

Counseling resources

Resources helpful to military families affected by PTSD is the focus of this week’s Spouse Calls column.
The Wounded Warrior Wives program of Operation Homefront is explained by the program’s director of clinical education and counseling services, Dr. Julie Storey. (Click here to read the Mar. 2 Spouse Calls.)
WWW is for spouses of veterans with all types of injuries. For more information, or to find out how to get involved, contact Julie at drjulie@cinchouse.com.
