Careers: Thinking outside the box

What does it take to move your prized possessions? An extra large box? Yards of bubble wrap? Twenty-gallon plastic totes? How about your career? Making frequent moves does not keep military spouses from meaningful careers, but it certainly presents challenges.

I know spouses who are attorneys, physicians, teachers, professional photographers, crime scene investigators, realtors, just to name a few career choices.

At some places it is difficult or impossible to continue a particular career, but sometimes a location is an opportunity rather than an obstacle. One of my military spouse friends is taking advantage of being stationed in Los Angeles by writing and recording her first album. Another was a sailing instructor while living in Hawaii.

A Spouse Calls reader wrote to ask about opportunities for careers overseas. I contacted Janet Farley, military spouse and author of "The Military Spouse's Complete Guide to Career Success," and passed on a few of her suggestions. One of her ideas is to use every opportunity to learn more and broaden your skills. (Click here to read the May 20 Spouse Calls column about careers.)

What is your experience? Have you been able to maintain a stable career throughout your moves? Have you become totally frustrated trying to have any career at all? Many military spouses choose to be stay-at-home moms. Some, like me, combine that with a stay-at-home job. How does that work for you and your family? Do you find it fulfilling?

As spouses, we are not all alike, but we can benefit from one another's experiences. Please share your career comments.
