Commissary Tippers Tell All
Posted May 16th, 2007 by Terri BarnesHow do you balance the family budget with the knowledge that “Baggers work for tips only,” as the sign at the commissary reminds us?
Thanks to all of you who gave your two cents worth in the blog poll about tipping the baggers. A reader with bagging experience wrote to give her side of the story (See June 10 Spouse Calls.) It's good to see both sides of the story.
For more points of view read on ... and leave your own thoughts if you like.

commissary tips
I tend to not tip as high at our commissary as I have at others in the past because our baggers do only that - bag.
Just bag it!
There is something to be said for a little extra service or a kind word ... However, I have seen the other extreme. At one commissary where I used to shop, there was a bagger who often tried to sell me homegrown produce from the back of her car. Needless to say, I began to avoid her lane!
Tip
I tip all the time im not a selfish person maybe its because I worked as a waiter during high school but it doesnt hurt my budget at all by tipping I leave 3-5 dollars all the time when I go to the store...........
Baggers' Tips
I came from a non-military lifestyle, so tipping baggers is a relatively new concept for me. I was somewhat opposed to having to pay someone to bag and take out my groceries at first, but I realized that by having a bagger, my waiting time in line is reduced (which is helpful in our instant "go-go" society). I think that the tip amount a bagger receives should be based on how hard they work for it, how many carts of groceries they push per customer, and the weather conditions.
By being a cashier at the Commissary, and I have come appreciate baggers so much! They have taught me how to do my job better and taught me how to be a better Commissary customer.
Baggers are well appreciated
I appreciate the baggers in the commissary, for without them the lines would be longer than they usually are. Just think if we didn't have baggers and we had to bag our groceries ourselves? I think it would considerably slow down the checkout process and the lines would grow and soon everyone would start complaining.
How much to tip a bagger....it's a personal choice. I tip $5 everytime I do large shopping which results in a bagger having to push a cart to my car. When I go through the express line I tip $1.
A shopper doesn't have to tip, but I say, if you don't want to tip then bag your own groceries and push them to your car yourself. Like the sign says, "baggers work for tips only." So, no tip; no work.
