Fourth grade perspectives on military life

“My favorite part of being a military brat is that I know that someone in my family is helping the world be a better place,” said Makenna, a fourth-grader from Ramstein Intermediate School. "The worst part is that you have to move a lot of times while your mom or dad are in the military,” she added.
Makenna and other students in Mrs. Kathy Keith's class shared their ideas about the ups and downs of military life in the July 22 Spouse Calls. Here are their thoughts:

  • “I like being a military child because I like to see the the planes.” – Chris
  • “I like being a military child because I make a lot of new friends and I get to go to a lot of different places. I don’t like (it) because I never get to stay in one place and I always have to change schools.” – MacKenzie
  • “I like not going broke when you PCS. The worst thing about being in the military … when you move, you have to leave your friends behind and you can get really lonely.” -- Emily C.
  • “My favorite thing about being a military brat is meeting all kinds of new people and being able to travel and have all these chances to see such fascinating places. My least favorite thing is that you always have to leave your friends behind when you PCS.” – Kathryn
  • “My favorite is that you get to travel a lot, learn many different languages and go to many different places that you couldn’t in the U.S. My least favorite thing about being a military kid is that you have to move around a lot and have to meet new friends a lot.” – Brandon
  • "I like being a military child because I get to see lots of different things that some kids don’t see their whole live. I don’t like (it) because once when you get comfy in a place you have to move and leave friends.” – Molly
  • “What I like about being in the military … because I get to meet new people and learn new cultures. I don’t like being a military child because I have to leave my friends behind and I have to fit into a new school.” – James
  • “The best thing about being a military child is that you go many different places. The worst thing is that when you move, you’ll never see your friends again.”-- Jacqueline
  • “I think the best part of being a military kid is that I get to go to a lot of places ... the worst part of being a military kid is that you have to find a house.” – Logan
  • “The best thing about being in the military is that I get to see new places. The worst thing about being in the military is that when I move I leave my friends behind." -- Christian
  • “My favorite part of being a military brat is to travel around the world. The worst part is moving away from my friends.” -- Jake
  • Good: “I meet new people and learn new things.” Bad: “I leave friends behind. I have to ride a plane.” – Khayla
  • “The good part about being in the military is that you get to travel around the world and meet new friends. The bad thing is that you don’t have much of a choice of where you get to move, and you never get to stay in one place for too long.” – Addison
  • “I like visiting new places like Colorado, Mississippi, Alabama. I don’t like leaving my friends. It is really sad when I leave.” -- Justin
  • Good: “You will not have to worry about how much you can spend o n food for my family. Discovering new places from moving differing areas in the world I don’t know about.” Bad: “You don’t get so many choices on where you want to move. It’s hard for parents to have to wear thick uniforms in very hot weather, and they have to either iron or wash their uniforms every day.” – Hannah
  • Best Things: "Holidays of a foreign country ... I get to taste the foreign foods like schnitzel." Worst Things: "Getting used to the laws and rules, and someone talking to you without you knowing what they are saying." -- Justice
  • "My favorite thing is that I feel safe on base. My worst thing is that you have to move a lot." -- Paola
  • "The worst part is leaving all your friends. The good part is exploring different countries in the world." -- Elijah
  • "My favorite thing about being in the military is meeting new people from my Dad's work and getting to go to parites or change of command ceremonies. My least favorite thing ... is having my dad get deployed or moving to a whole new place." -- Emily U.
  • "The best thing about being a military brat is that we get to go all over the world and see famous sites. One bad thing about being a military brat is that when we move we have to leave friends and people we have learned to love." -- Ciara

More thoughts from military kids

To hear from other fourth and fifth graders who enjoy speaking their minds, read the Stars & Stripes story by Mark St. Clair.

A group of students from Wurzburg Elementary School wrote letters to the editor of Stars & Stripes and became the subject of a news story.
