Updated - This post was updated after the completion of the White House event.
In the White House, on Monday, President Obama told an invited group of leaders from the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community that he knows their "deep disappointment" in not addressing "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" in his first six months in office.
"I believe ‘Don't Ask Don't Tell' doesn't contribute to our national security", he said. "In fact, I believe preventing patriotic Americans from serving their country weakens national security."
In recent weeks, gay leaders had openly criticized the Obama administration for not moving fast enough on issues including open military service, full equal benefits for gay federal workers' partners and families, and a federal law expressly prohibiting anyone from losing their job based on sexuality.
According to transcripts and reports from several White House reporters at the event, Obama noted that changing the military's policy -- as with many items on the LGBT political platform -- will require Congress to pass a new law.
That's the same thing Defense Secretary Robert Gates said in his last press conference, Jun 20. There, Gates said the extention of federal benefits and military policy required two different paths to change. For DADT, he said, the law comes first.
Gates: "This department's position is dictated by the fact there is a law. And the law only applies to people in uniform. So on the civilian side, we will absolutely apply and implement everything the president announced yesterday. But until the law is changed, our ability to change the policy is extremely limited, if not nonexistent."
Tony Perkins, of the conservative Family Research Council, said his group has felt "overwhelmed" by the Obama administration's full plate of "concessions" on LGBT issues.
Obama spoke for more than 20 minutes, entering to wild applause and receiving nothing but love. The White House DJ even spun some ABBA.
The president reminded the crowd of "extraordinary progress that we have made", saying: "There are unjust laws to overturn and unfair practices to stop. And though we've made progress, there are still fellow citizens, perhaps neighbors or even family members and loved ones, who still hold fast to worn arguments and old attitudes; who fail to see your families like their families; and who would deny you the rights that most Americans take for granted. And I know this is painful and I know it can be heartbreaking."
To be sure, the entire event was about much more than just "don't ask, don't tell."
Obama recognized an Army astronomer who was fired in 1957 for being gay and later protested in front of the White House. He noted Sunday's 40th anniversary of the Stonewall riots in Greenwich Village, NYC. He recounted the life-and-death struggle to understand, and survive, the emergence of HIV and AIDS.
Obama then said: "It's not for me to tell you to be patient, any more than it was for others to counsel patience to African Americans who were petitioning for equal rights a half-century ago."
The 20th Cenutry story of equal access in the military for African-Americans has often been compared to the contemporary efforts of gay and lesbian Americans seeking open military service.
Here is the entire passage from President Obama's remarks this evening on gay and lesbian service members in the U.S. armed forces:
"Now, my administration is already working with the Pentagon and members of the House and the Senate on how we'll go about ending this policy, which will require an act of Congress.
"Someday, I'm confident, we'll look back at this transition and ask why it generated such angst, but as commander in chief, in a time of war, I do have a responsibility to see that this change is administered in a practical way and a way that takes over the long term. That's why I've asked the secretary of Defense and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to develop a plan for how to thoroughly implement a repeal.
"I know that every day that passes without a resolution is a deep disappointment to those men and women who continue to be discharged under this policy -- patriots who often possess critical language skills and years of training and who've served this country well. But what I hope is that these cases underscore the urgency of reversing this policy not just because it's the right thing to do, but because it is essential for our national security."
Additionally, the parents of Matthew Shepard were there, and in their presence Obama pledge to sign a hate crimes bill. He also gave support to a host of other issues on the LGBT political agenda, including ending the ban on HIV positive travelers entering the U.S. The U.S. has never hosted the world's preeminent annual international AIDS conference because of the ban.
THIS POST HAS BEEN UPDATED: The original version identified Obama as having recognized a former NASA worker. Frank Kameny was an astronmer, but was working for the Army when he was fired for being gay. In his words, from an interview in MetroWeekly:
"I [was fired] from the Army Map Service in December 1957. To my knowledge, I was the first person to appeal one of these firings."
Perhaps more relevant to the occassion, and this page, Kameney is a veteran: "I ended up as an 81mm-mortar crewman in an armored infantry battalion in the Eighth Armored Division. We ran into combat in Holland and then in the Rhineland. We were halfway across Germany when the war finally ended in May 1945."

DADT
My son just spent 15 months at a remote outpost in Afghanistan. No women, even military, or access to sex. How would this work if openly gay soliders are "hooking up" during this time of deprivation? Doesn't this give them unfair treatment? Would it not cause damage to morale and discipline if conflicts erupted among gays over sexual liasons? Please explain how this would work.
A Military Mom
DADT
There is a standing General Order prohibiting sex in OIF and OEF deployed locations. This is yet another example of basic human rights being taken away from service members by our government. But, relative to heterosexuals, the order is not unfair to gay service members. Any soldiers (gay or straight) caught violating the order are subject to UCMJ.
To answer your question on how this would work...it would work if LGBT soldiers were not discriminated against by others.
I've been serving on active duty for 20 years and have deployed seven times. I'm embarrassed and ashamed to work for an organization that continues to openly practice discrimination and violate the basic human rights of our nation’s best.
And, no I'm not gay, the law is just wrong.
I fully understand your
I fully understand your care and support for your son but my nephew who serves in the Israeli Army where gays serve OPENLY has only been shocked to hear this debate going on in the USA. Now...why is it in nearly all Countries like (Germany/France/Israel/Poland,etc....the "straight men" survive perfectly well? Sorry Mam..but this thinking of yours is so limited. Israel has some of the best and well trained soldiers in the World with daily confrontations going on for decades and my nephew's Superior is gay and yet, gay soldiers are all around him.
He simply laughs at these issues in the States as do most in his Brigade. And, if a man wants sex with another man in service...I can assure you it might relieve alot of stress. Come on USA....grow up and stop being naive and ignorant. And this Mom who wrote about your Son being exposed to Gays in the military...I would be more than glad to hook you up with my Nephew's Mother and you can ask her about your concerns...be ready...she might simply laugh through the whole conversation. GROW UP PEOPLE and get out of your hole.
The President's Meeting with Gay Leaders
First, a factual error in your reporting - Frank Kameny did not work for NASA. He was an astronomer at the Naval Observatory. Your reporter stated as fact something that he inferred or dreamed up. Is that common in Stars and Stripes reporting?
Secondly, I am amazed that mothers who are willing to send their big, strapping sons into battle are worried that those same men would be unable to refuse an advance from a gay soldier. How absurd! Is the concerned mom worried that her son might start pitching for the other team under the pressures of battle conditions?
Thirdly, Stars and Stripes frequently uses the term "sexual preference" rather than "sexual orientation." "Sexual preference" is coded language normally used only by Christian fundamentalist news organizations. Its use is prohibited by major newspapers because of its demeaning conotation. It equally suggests that heterosexuals may "prefer" same-sex partners one day! Perhaps those who use the term think that is truly possible.
It saddens me greatly that we spend so much time on this issue. Is the US military so insecure that we can not integrate decent and patriotic gay soldiers in the same way that Israel and Britain did so easily? It was a non-event in both countries. Turkey and the US are the only NATO nations which prohibit service of open gay and lesbian personnel.
If I were the concerned mom, I would be more worried about my son having to bunk with a convicted felon or a mental defective, both of whom are now being allowed to join the ranks of our military.
What!? "Christian Fundamentalist"
"Thirdly, Stars and Stripes frequently uses the term "sexual preference" rather than "sexual orientation." "Sexual preference" is coded language normally used only by Christian fundamentalist news organizations.
I'm not a "Christian Fundamentalist", & I believe the description "sexual preference" is the correct one to use. I also see the comparisons between the two terms "sexual orientation", & "sexual preference." I also see the comparisons in they're definitions.. i.e
sexual orientation- one's natural preference in sexual partners; predilection for homosexuality, heterosexuality, or bisexuality and sexual preference- The preference one shows by having a sexual interest in members of the same, opposite, or either sex.
I don't know.. looks to me its like the, "You say Tomato, & I say Tomaato" thing.
In closing, I'd also like to state, for the record.. The reason behind Mass Media has switched to using the term, "sexual orientation" is mostly about being "Politically Correct" IMO.. that's whats sucking the life out of the Country. I'm in my 40's, so I know what was, & was not before political correctness was around. With it, you have to walk on egg shells, speaking in public. If one person gets offended, out of the 4 billion others, listening to the same speech, all he!! breaks out, & someones head is needed to appease that One person. Not to mention the fact that when having a conversation with someone you know has a different point of view as you do.. God help you if you disagree with them, so you just avoid debating issues... thus stifling free & open debates on controversial topics.
DADT
To answer Millitary Mom, I was at Iraq, most of the people hooking up were my Female Team lead and Female LT who were taking the Hum V to see thier husbands, and we had a married couple in our co ed unit as well. No one complained, as far as me being a now out gay ex army member I did my job very well, served six years and now am going studying for a masters degree. I think it is assinine to not allow someone to serve for what is a private matter, and you think just because certain people are gay they are automatically going to hook up, well my unit was co-ed and no one automatically hooked up will the females. Are you worried about moral or that your son might find other interest if he knew of a fellow gay soldier. If that statement was a little insulting but what u said was just as bad, we are there to do a job just like everyone else, in a life or death situation sex is the last thing one someone mind.
Catering to the LGBT
When is our currently seated President going to start dealing with real issues that important to the Country as a whole. I for one, am fed up with the LGBT, AND amnesty for Illegal alien's issue's. These seem to be topic's that keep getting brought up time and time again... even after congressmen (& women.. lets be "POLITICALLY CORRECT"! I'm had my fill of that too) offices get flooded with calls from constituents, every time these issues come to the House & Senate floors for a vote, screaming " they don't want whatever the issue, being shoved down American's throats by the LGBT lobbyist (i.e. don't ask, don't tell, LGBT's uniting as legally married couples, making they're issue a CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT'S ISSUE.. I see that all over the Internet. BTW.. when is a sexual preference been a constitutional issue. They need to read the Constitution. They may wish it was.. but wishing don't make it so. Mr Obama needs to start listening to the majority, as do Congressmen (& women!). If it wern't for the fact that LGBT's have infiltrated congress, & other political offices around this country, And they're lobbyist groups are throwing big "MONEY" around in Washington. These issues would die, & stay dead. Ever heard the ole saying, "Money talks, but BS walks"? I think of that quote a lot lately.
